Show I At last there has been an awakening In society circles, and from now until the beginning of Ixmt there promises to be a continual round of pleasures. The week just past has been one of unusual activity even for the height of the so-slal so-slal season, but the previous weeks had been exceedingly dull, and the change 1 was most welcome. New Year's day I was an especially delightful one, a ' number of society people keeping open i house, while the dawn of the New Year , was made memorable by many Infor mal evening parties. The larger events of the coming week i will be the flrst of the assembly balls on Tuesday evening at Chrlstensen's ' and the Red and Black party at the same hall on Friday evening. Engagement Announced. The friends of Mrs. Louise Smedley-Smlth, Smedley-Smlth, and they are leirlon, were deep- 1 ly Interested in learning of her engagement engage-ment to William H. Curtln of St. Joseph, Jo-seph, Mo., formally announced on Friday Fri-day last. Mrs. Smith from her earliest girlhood has been most popular In the social circles of Salt Lake. Mr. Curtin Is a prominent business man of St. Jo-1 Jo-1 seph, a member of the Wyeth Hard- 1 ware company. The wedding will lake place shortly after Easter. Alta Club Reception. The members of the Alta club have decided upon Thursday evening, January Janu-ary 11th, as the date for their reception. recep-tion. Invitations will be confined to members of the club and their immediate imme-diate families. The event promises to be one of the most elaborate of the season. The- Post Hop. Very delightful' was the hop at the Post Tuesday evening, the first of a series of formal dances to be given during the season. Flags, bunting, holly and evergreen festoons were used in the decoration of the amusement hall and the Officers' club, and very at- tractive they looked. Refreshments were served in the club from tables beautifully decorated with red carna-' carna-' tlons and plumosa. About 125 guests ' were there, and all declared the dance I one of the most enjoyable affairs of the season. Col. and Mrs. Bubb,- Capt. nnd , Mrs. Sturgls, Capt. and Mrs. Falls and Lieut, and Mrs. Taylor received the I guests. Mrs. Pardee, Mrs. Hepburn and Mrs. Swift poured coffee. First Bohemian Banquet. The Bohemian banquet at the Commercial Com-mercial club on Tuesday evening was a splendid success, and will be remembered remem-bered by those present as one of the very happy events of the year. So en- . joyable and successful was the banquet that It is believed It will result In the organization of a Bohemian club, or at least will-be followed by similar events at more or less frequent Intervals, The large dining-room of the Commercial club was the scene of the banquet, and very festive it looked with Its decora- , tions of evergreens and palms, with vases of deep red carnations and red shaded crystal candlesticks down the center of the long T-shaped table. Directly Di-rectly In front of the toastmaster, Kenneth Ken-neth C. Kerr, was a miniature cast of the equestrienne statue of Paul Revere by Utah's noted sculptor, C, E. Dallln. I After disposing of a delicious spread, Mr. Kerr, in a clever speech, stated the purpose of the banquet the organiza tion of a permanent Bohemian club, or at least the giving of similar aooial affairs af-fairs once or twice a year, or oftener, if desired. The serious toasts of the evening were given by Fisher S. Harris, Har-ris, who. was very happy In his remarks re-marks on "The True Spirit of Bohemia." Bo-hemia." H. L. A. Culmer spoke of "Art In Utah," and George E, Carpenter Carpen-ter on "Literature In Utah." Then followed fol-lowed a number of Impromptu toasts, the first, "The Press and the Petticoat," Petti-coat," by Benjamin C. Cartwright. Several Sev-eral musical numbers were given during dur-ing the evening by Miss Agatha Berk-hoel, Berk-hoel, Wlllard Weihe and Mr. McClellan, and needless to say they were all given in the best style by these well-known artists. All in all, the banquet was one of the most delightful ever given here. Assembly Committees Earned. On Tuesday evening at Chrlstensen's the first In the series of Assembly balls will bo given. A large number of responses re-sponses have been received to the Invitations In-vitations extended, and the dances promise to be among the season's memorable social events.
