Show LAST NIGHTS COUNCIL MEETING The City Council hint night amended the liquor ordinance so as substantially to meet the Mayors objections to It In Its form as first passed and enacted It aa amended The Mayor will therefore there-fore most likely approve It aa it now goes to him It Is more a compilation than new enactment and wllj probably prob-ably work aa smoothly as the disjointed liquor legislation we have had The Council also passed over the Mayors veto the agreement to pay a proportion of the expense of tho pumpIng pump-Ing plant Although this IB vicious legislation and calculated to lead to expensive complications with returns of small proportion to the cost there will probably now be llltle or no resistance re-sistance to the appropriation The pumps did their work well the latter part of the past season and relieved not only tho county but the city from a very serious situation n tho piano of the Commltlee of Fifty are adopted and endorsed by statute and by the people it Is likely that the pumping will be merely a temporary measure to be superseded by the more perfect supply lhat will available But In the present financial condlllon of the city It is not easy to see where tho money Is to come from unless some olhcr liability Is abridged or denied |
