Show BUll FiGHT AS IT IS S I Chicago Lawyer Tells How It Is in Mexico 1 NO DANGER IN CONNECTION I Game Goes According to Rule and c Only Animals Suffer Howard Carter Describes the Mexican Pastime as He Saw It During Dur-ing Past Summer 0 li I i1 I A most graphic account of a Mexican Mex-ican bull fight was given at theKnuts ford last night by l Howard M Carter a young Chicago lawyer who visited the land ofthcMontczumaslastsum me LACK OF DANGER What suiprlsed me most he said was J the lack of any element of danger dan-ger and the utter Imbecility of the bullr Onl > two men in the republic are nllowed to raise bulls for the ring One of these was tho landlord of the hotel where I was stopping He never goes to the fights when his bulls arC being used because there Is no telling when ono of the bulls will fall to come I up tothe scratch and In such an1 evont the audience is apt to become Irritated t Ir-ritated and throw things at the I breeder t ALL ACCORDING TO RULE I n rhe whole game Is played accordIng accord-Ing to certain Jet rules as fixed as though iu a tfeball game The crowd I instantly notices any deviation and sets up a howl The arena is I 150 or 160 feet in diameter There Is an Inner ring with a fence around It to afford protection for the players When a bull Jumprt this fence as they very often do he Is herded around the circle until he comes to a gate that haD been opeued across his path and which brings him back into the central enclosure en-closure Hcl8 much surprised to llnd 7 himself back where he started from CONFUSING THE BULL I But to begin at the beginning the bul finds himself in u dark narrow postage away back under tho seats Away off at the end ho sees a utroak of light unrl makes a break for It lie I runs clear out Into the middle of tInt vine 1 before he rftops to look around I Every bull does this When he does begin to take notice he sees a man Lover L-over at once sldw I of the ring waving a red cloth at him Ho puts down hit head and makes a beeline for the cloth When he gels Just about to it It disappears The man has gone over the fence Mr Bull loolw around again t and sees another red thlpg at the other aide of the arena He niakos an q I other rush and the cloth gets away I from him again The bull always makes I 1 I straight for the cloth and nover pays any attention to the man BLINDFOLDED HORSES This piny goes on till the bull begins I to get tired Then the men with the flags disappear and the bull on look ing around sees two men on hornobaok t They have been there all the time but Taurus has been too busy to notice I them The horses are usually old I brokendown bucks and have Imnduges II around their heads sp au to cover one 4 I 1 ii I f eye The leg of the rider on the same side as the bandaged eye io padded like the legs of a football player The rider carries ft light lance with a point Just long enough to pierce the bulls hide He keeps the blind side of the horse turned toward the bull FORMALITY OF JOBBING The bulL who IK puzzled and per luibcd by the strange disappearance of the red things now proceeds to find out whether the hordes are spooks or i the real thing As thc bull draws near the picador Jabs him with the lance The hull does not feel It any more than he would a fly but it IB a part of the game and has to be done in a certain way or the crowd will holler DEATH OF THE STEEDS Just as the bull gets to the horse the picador slips off the other slue and takes to the woods The blinded horse does not see what he Is up against and stands there quietly while the bull pierces him with his long slender horns The first thrust is generally fatal and the horse sinks dead In his tracks If he Is not pitched over the fence It Is not distressing to cee the horse killed as It would bo If he were a good animal You feel that It Is more or less of a mercy to put him out of hi > misery After he has finished with one horse and picador the bull turns his attention to the other Vhcn the second 1 horse Is killed the fellows on the bleachers set up a yell for more horses BANDERILLOS AFFIXED By this time the bull Is I supposed to be getting pretty tired Everything runs on schedule < time nnd In Just fifteen fif-teen minutes from the time ho enters the arena the bull is supposed to be finished As soon as the second horse Is killed the fellows with the banderll los bounce Into the ring The bander lllos are pointed shafts wrapped with colored paper and ribbons Each man has two He waves thorn In front of him until he attracts the attention of the bull who comcH for him head down At the proper mpment he Jabs a banderlllo In each shoulder and then steps nimbly aside He has to get them In Just the right place or he getH bawled out by the fans on the bleachers who Insist on having every thing done up according to the J idles The banderlllos do take some chances but the bull Is generally pretty well tired out before they do tllelr stunl MATADOR APPEARS While the bnndcrlllos are entertain lag the bull the matador Jumps Into the ring and bows to the president not the President or the republic for he does not approve of bull fights and has put u atop to them several tImes hut the president of the function who Is umpiring the game The matador wears a cloak a typical Spanish hat one of the round fiat kind and carries car-ries a sword His appearance seta the bleachers wild nnd while they arc bnivolnfe him he takes off his hat and tosses It up into the crowd Whoever holds It is expected to put some money In it after the game The porter ut my hotel told me that the man who got the hat was expected to put 500 In It hut I think that 5 makes tho matador fairly happy BULL FINALLY DIES The bandcrilloJ retire and tho mata dor faces the bull who Is I now tired and bewildered The man holds out his red cloak In his right hand until the bull accH It and makes u dive for It Ho atlll I goes after the cloak and does not see the man Tho matador drops the cloak and goes through some passes that evidently mean volumes to the spectators although they are rather mysterious to t a stranger Then he lakes up his position about six feet from the bull and gently waves the red cloth Just under his right arm The bull paws the earth and puta his head down for another rush Just at that moment the matador drops his cloak and Hprlngs forward raising his sword Before the bull hnn time to move the I sword la I thrust Into I his shout r der half way to the hilt He trembles for a moment and then goes down n If ho had been shot The matador stands close by watching him GREAT APPLAUSE When it Is all ver a team of decorated dec-orated mules is driven In and hitched to the carcass which Is I hauled out of the arena The fans so wild They throw money and cigars at the feel of the gladiator who has an understudy to gather them up while lie bows his acknowledgments The man who has been holding his hat puts the 3500 In U and a lot of other fellows throw their dirty old headpieces into the ring |
