Show 7 DIDNT SEE AUCTIONEER tt S Determination of Management to Remove Scenery in Afternoon Resulted In Calling Off Evening Performance of Play The Auctioneer Shall Not Auct Tonight To-night recited Manager Pyper yesterday yester-day afternoon when he was Informed that the Betting of the second act was to be loaded on the train Immediately after the matinee The scenery used In this net Is especially espe-cially attractive and Mr Pyper felt that It would be unfair to hlo patrons to take their money and give them In exchange a production Inferior to those presented during the earlier part of the week It meant the loss of his nights receipts as It was Impossible to use the house for anything else but he stood pat Hundreds of people came to the Theater 1 The-ater and learned to their disappointment I disappoint-ment that the performance was off They received their money back and I when the situation was explained exonerated ex-onerated Mr Pyper from all blame and many commended him for his stand for the rights of his patrons Mr AVarQeld said at the Knuthtord last night My manager Informed Mr Pyper this afternoon that the settlnc for the second act would have to be loaded In the car Immediately after the matinee IMr Pyper replied that he would not permit the night < performance to go on if this scenery were not used It really did not make any ditto rence as the Theater supplied all the material necessary to set the parlor scene used In tho second act and the play Is not one of those productions that depends on scenic effects The I setting for the first and third acts would have been held until the last We carry two cars of scenery and as we are billed to open In San Francisco Monday night we were compelled to load one car In the afternoon The conversation with Mr Pyper was held 1 over the telephone If I had had a chance to explain to him personally I person-ally I believe I coujd have nhown him where he was wrong T deeply regret the occurrence I have been most cordially cor-dially received and It has been an Inspiration I In-spiration to play to such audiences The removal of the scenery was however how-ever unavoidable We have forfeited our share of the nights receipts which lis I a clear loss because the salaries and expenses have to be met Just the I same It afterward turned out that Mr Warfleld would have had ample time to get all his scenery on the late train as the westbound train on the Union Pa clllc and the northbound train on the Rio Grande were from two to three hours late The company engaged a special which left fQr Ogden before midnight as they were afraid of missIng miss-Ing connections |
