Show I FATAL HEADEND COLLISION Trains Came Together at Tonka Engineer En-gineer Forgot OrdorsHo Was Fatally Injured Ogden Sept 23A headend collision occurred on the Southern Pacific at Tonka station about seven miles east of Carlin Nov about 5 oclock this morning Eastbound Overland Limited No 2 and westbound passenger No 1 crashed together derailing both engines en-gines and perhaps fatally Injuring Engineer En-gineer William Warner of Ogden Tonka Isa sidetrack and Engineer Warner of the United had an order to wait at tM = ldln for No1 westbound west-bound ll < 3 overlooked his orders and crashed Into the passenger head on Both engines were wrecked and derailed I railed and a brakeman was Immediately Immedi-ately dispatched to the telegraph office at Carlin to notify Superintendent Noble No-ble and physicians I from Elko were dispatched to the scone Both engineers i engi-neers Warner and Tom Llndsey also of Ogden were burled beneath the debris de-bris but were extricated and Lindsey was found practically uninjured Warner War-ner however is suffering from a fractured frac-tured skull and concussion of the brain and Is not likely to recover The firemen fire-men and balance of tho train crews saved themselves by jumping Train No 2 bearing the Injured reached Ogden at 9 oclock this evenInG even-ing eight hours late Engineer Warner is In a critical condition He was Immediately Im-mediately removed to the hospital where every attention was given him but he died at 1050 His skull was found to be fractured causing a concussion con-cussion of the brain and he was injured in-jured internally Lawrence Sm the and Earl BrownIng Brown-Ing the two firemen went to their homes Smythe had his collarbone I broken and Brownings shoulder was fractured OVERLOOKED ORDERS As near as can be learned the wreck was entirely due to an overlooking of the orders by Engineer Warner of the castbound limited lie had been in strucled to pass No 2 at Tonka siding but forgot his Instructions and the first that Engineer Lindsay saw of No 1 It was rushing down upon him at a high rate of speed JJndKiy of the westbound train having the right of way was standing on the main line walling for the other train to run onto the side track As he row the oncoming train and realized that I a collision wan Inevitable ho 1 endeavored to back put of time way but It was too late A curious Incident In connection with Warners death was told by 1 one of his Intlirilo friends to The Tribune lst night He stated that he had rjcon talking with Warner Just before he went out on the fatal trip and that I Warner had said l that If he ever made a ml tIe he didnt want to live to seethe see-the result of It Warner was one of the old t railroad l men In the city In point of s rlcl and In married and has two children his wife being at present In I Oakland Cnl on n visit The body was removed to Richeys under Inking I parlors where it will be prepared for burial I |
