Show I ISRAEl IS INDIGNANT Startling Proposal By President Presi-dent of Congregation MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT Members of the Congregation Have Received a Circular Inviting Them to Consider the Question of Leasing Leas-ing Their Tomplo to the Unitarians Unitar-ians for Enough to Pay Interest on Mortgage and of Abandoning the Hebrew Sabbath for the Christian Sunday I 1C n largesized bombshell with a glowing fuse attached had suddenly dropped from the clouds among the members of Congregation Bnai Israel they could not have been more astounded astound-ed than they were yesterday when they received a circular from the president of the congregation Simon Bamberger calling for C meeting In the temple tomorrow to-morrow evening to discuss the advisability advisa-bility of dissolving the organization closing the fool of the temple and renting the house or worship to Gentiles DIPLOMATIC CIRCULAR The circular does not bluntly state these things In so many words it states that tIme directors desire to discuss with the congregation and decide whether or not the coming holiday should be observed ob-served The Jewish New Year begins next Wednesday and that Is the lime when scarcely a Jew in the whole world falls to attend divine services The suggestion sug-gestion therefore coming at this time to suspend the congregational services entirely at such an Important season from a man so Influential In the church Is a shock to the moral and a senna traditional tra-ditional fooling of every Jew In the congregation But this Is not the most astonishing part t of the circular Further on It is stated that the question o employing a rabbi will come up and the document ends with this climax TO RENT TUB TEMPLE The directors desire the congregation congrega-tion to share with them the responsibility responsi-bility of keeping the temple open during dur-ing the coming year or otherwise renting rent-ing It to the Unitarians for an amount audlclent to pay the interest on the outstanding out-standing mortgage As the finances of the organization arc considered In good condition the members are utterly unable to understand under-stand why any suggestion should be made looking to the end proposed In the circular The membership la I fairly strong and numbers within I It some of I the wealthiest men In the community so it has been supposed that a mal mortgage outstanding was not suffi cent cause to give any ono serious concern con-cern cernCHANGE CHANGE HOURS OF SERVICE As to the proposition to employ a rabbi It Is pointed out that the congregation congre-gation has In Rabbi Reynolds < a man who has won the respect and esteem of the people not only of his own flock but of other churches and the outside world as well Another question suggested In I the fue lon JSSesle1 circular for discussion and advocated by a number of the members Is the advisability of changing the hour of the Sabbath services from Friday evening to Sunday forenoon I Is thought by some of the members that the hint at dissolution is being used to coerce them Into acquiescence In this change Last night the matter was eagerly discussed wherever a few Jews came together and there was a common expression ex-pression of wonder and dlsapproal of the propositions advocated in President BnmbcrgcrH circular It Is evident that the meeting tomorrow evening will be largely attended and though a lively I time Is confidently anticipated there la I no fear but that the outcome of the discussion to the organization will be of substantial benefit |
