Show SUNDAY SELLING QUESTION Council Wrangles for an Hour With It and Has It Still to Settle For an hour last night the City Council Coun-cil wrestled with tho proposition of revoking re-voking tho licenses of the saloonkeepers found guilty of violating the city ordinances In regard to selling on Sunday Nothing definite was accomplished ac-complished and al the close the matter was left In as much of a muddle as In the beginning The matter camo up on the motion of Eardlcy to the effect that A B Margetts the Wagener Brewing company com-pany O B Moore and Browning Dahlstead be cited to appear before the Council and show cause why their city licenses should not be revoked Thomns made the point that the licenses li-censes had expired and suggested that It would be ridiculous for the Council to try to revoke licenses that were not In existence Davelcr took tire position that the Council has no right to resolve Itself Into a criminal court and try men for supposed violations of tho law Ho moved to lay the whole matter on the Uible but the motion was lost Tud denham took strong ground against Davelcr on the proposition that the Council could not Invcstlgat violations of city ordinances After tho niatlcr had been discussed further by Sharp Cottrell Hewlett Thomas and Davelcr A J Davis called attention to the fact that the violators were present two weeks ago but that the Council adjourned ad-journed to go to the prizefight Eard ley said he tried to call the matter up hut Davis said this was after he got to the prizefight Thomas finally offered as a substitute substi-tute for all that was before the Council a resolution citing forth that as the Council had failed to try the violators that as two of the licenses had expired and the third would expire In two weeks It he resolved that no new licenses be Issued to these parties until the Council Is satisfied that the laws will be respected and the Council has given Its consent to the Issuance of licenses li-censes This gave rise to another wrangle In the midst of which the whole matter was laid upon tho table Then It was taken from the table by a vote of 0 I lo 6 and this Is held to be Illegal and will lead up to another wrangle at the next session Cottrell objected to the first part of the resolution ns It carried car-ried the Idea that the Council had not done Its duty in the matter His Idea prevailed An amendment offered by him was accepted and then the resolution resolu-tion went through The ordinance prohibiting the blockIng block-Ing of the streets with building material ma-terial was passed and the ordinance regulating the sale of Intoxicating liquors was under discussion when a motion to adjourn prevailed Joseph J Olsen a carpenter earning 360 a day fell Into an excavation while riding on the bicycle path near the railroad tracks on Second South street August 2 1002 when the lights were out He sustained Injuries that will keep him from work five or six weeks yet and asks for compensation The matter went to the Committee on Claims The appointment of M Kant as member mem-ber of the fire department was confirmed con-firmed by unanimous vote The appointment of Charles H Gates as city poundkeeper was confirmed without opposition |
