Show IT WAS A DRY SUNDAY The order of Chief of Police Sheets that the saloons be all closed and that the blinds and screens be left ao that the interior could be clearly visible was generally and faithfully carried out yesterday There were no drunken men on the streets and there was but one arrest for violation of the ordinances ordi-nances It was an object lesson of efficient ef-ficient work and also of the disposition to lawabldlngncEs among the saloonkeepers saloon-keepers when they are convinced that the order to close means business The claim made by Mr Hilton the Chief of Police whom the Council sustained with persistent strcnuostty for no reason whatever save that he was a Mormon and In spite of his notorious incompetence Incompe-tence is thus completely disproved lie held that is was impossible to enforce the Sundayclosing law although Mayor Thompson has Insisted from the first that it should be done The order issued by Chief Sheets the latter part of the week in pursuance of the Mayors May-ors welldeclared policy and standing direction and its emphatic enforcement enforce-ment show that there was no difficulty at any time about this matter save only at police headquarters and that the blame which was sought to be attached at-tached to Mayor Thompson In this behalf be-half has all along been entirely unwarranted unwar-ranted The city is now on the lawful and proper basis the Republican pledges are In a fair way of being redeemed re-deemed and the lack of attention to the patty pledge is now plainly seen to be chargeable < to the City Council which has professed compliance but has acted BO as to make compliance impossible We shall see how Councilmen like the new departure |
