| Show CLEAN CITY CLUB Organization Pledging Members to Use Their Utmost Endeavors to Keep Rubbish Off Streets Etc A general meeting of the city teachers was held yesterday morning in the high school building The following I pledge was placed upon every desk in the assembly sembly hal I hereby become a member of the Clean City club by pledging my word of honor not to scatter any scraps of paper or peeling or tin cans or brQken dishes or old clothing or any rubbish whatever upon any street alley sidewalk side-walk gutter or vacant lot I also agree If possible to keep sidewalk in front of my house swept and furthermore will do all within my power to make our city clean Before the addresses were given Mrs Jennings a teacher In the high school and a member of the Ladles Literary club made some remarks upon the pledge In every large city there Is a general movement toward the cleanli ness of the city she said I has not yet been started in our city she continued con-tinued but the people aro awakening to tho responsibility and are anxious to asslsL The health officers are making mak-ing strenuous efforts to have our city in a good sanitary condition and every citizen should try to uphold their hands Every such movement should Include the children for they are potent factors I Is to be hoped that some kind of a league may be formed here as in Chicago Chi-cago where children may belong and assist I the teachers and school chill chi dren are Interested and will help I means a tremendous force In favor of Jt Mrs Bailey of the Home and Educa tional department of the Ladles Literary Lite-rary club read a paper upon the same subject In brief she said that a great many schools in the East have formed leagues to help clean the city that Is see to peels upon the street bits of paper and bags thrown here and there and nnc try to remedy that There seems to be a desire to do so here The club has ordered small buttons as campaign buttons and every child who signs the pledge will 0 given one to show that he is an active worker In this particular parlCllar club The lades were assured of the hearty cooperation of tho teachers In the movement Miss Rosalie Pollock the primary supervisor su-pervisor of the city schools gave an entertaining en-tertaining and Instructive address upon Your Duty to Yourselvs The teacher teach-er Is apt to become narrow she said but they should srow in their profession profes-sion should have the same enthusiasm a the doctor or lawyer They should read books of i wide outlook and delve Into the fields of literature In some places teachers have formed clubs to take up the study of certain books or Just for the reading Profs Marshall and Bcnnlon of the University have classes for the study of literature and borne of the city teachers teach-ers have taken advantage of this opportunity op-portunity to become broader She advocated ad-vocated belonging to clubs where professional pro-fessional literature Is read In closing she said Enthusiasm will save usa great deal Let us be enthusiastic enthu-siastic and that will keep us fresh and alive to our work Superintendent Christensen followed with an address on Some Observations Observa-tions which referred to his visit to Chicago He said there were about 700 superintendents in attendance at the meeting and it was very beneficial to all present He mentioned some of the prominent speakers and some of the salient points in their addresses lie visited some of the schools In the city ciy and he felt that our schools compared very favorably He then spoke about schoolroom discipline upon the character charac-ter of n chid Order is a means to facilitate fa-cilitate work but order will GO beyond the schoolroom A wellordered room will manifest itself at home on the street or out In company Schools may be In D certain sense responsible for the character of some pupils I may affect them either for good or bad He Is opposed to whipping and suspension sus-pension although In some cases it has to be done he said Suspension Is not a punishment to pupils but to the parents par-ents and the child Is out of school away from good Influence The chorus work done by the Jackson and Oqulrrh schools was heartily hearti received re-ceived The former rendered Suwancft River and the latter Golden Years Or le Post singing the solo part in avery a-very creditable manner |
