| Show SAVED MANY LIVES LifeSaving Crew and Tug Meriitt I Rescue TwentyFour Men Norfolk Va March 22Capt Guarey and the crew of twentythree men of the Spanish steamer Ea which stranded and went to pieces off Cape Lookout last Saturday reached Norfolk Nor-folk this afternoon and left tonight on the Old Dominion line for Now York from where they will ship for Spain The credit for saving tho lives of the captain and crew Is due to Capt Coley of the wreckingtug Mcrrltt of this city In order to get at the men the Merrill towed the members of the llfe avlng crow to the windward of the wrecked steamer and let go the storm driving them In the way of the vessel Twelve of the crew were then taken off and towed to the Merrill This was done the second time the boat being almost swamped beneath the waves and finally the remaining membcr were saved Then the Spaniards not having eaten or drank for four nights and three days were given food and walfjr and warm clothing All were nearly frozen and half dead from exposure |
