Show BINGHAM LEGION CREW DEFEATED IN FIRST GAME The Bingham American Legion Le-gion team entered in the Utah American Legion Junior baseball tournament at Brigham City as champions of third district was beaten 15 to 8 by the Provo team last Friday, the first day of play. This is the first year in many seasons that the Bingham team, holders of the title in 1939, has not gone on into the finals. The score was tied 6-6 in the seventh. Pitcher Jack Thurmond suffered a sprained ankle in the first of that inning and was replaced re-placed by Bobby Overson. Provo turned Overson's offerings into clean hits. Bingham's hitting did not compare favorably with the opposition, op-position, either, as the boys garnered gar-nered but 7 to Provo's 20. Several Seve-ral errors in the outfield gave the local team a bad appearance and made Provo's win the easier. However, the Bingham entry is made up of comparatively young players, six of whom will be back next year. If a catcher and a pitcher can be developed, the 1942 chapion-ship chapion-ship race will see Bingham fighting fight-ing it out with the leaders. On the whole, tournament play this year was below par. Neither pitching or fielding were up to standard. Helper, defending champions cham-pions coached by George Pizza, won the title this year with a 7-6 victory over Ogden in the final round Sunday. Joe Ricci of the Helper squad was named outstanding player of the tournament. tourn-ament. Bingham's K. Nelson was picked pick-ed on the all-tournament nine. K. was easily the best-looking infielder. He obtained two hits in four trips to the plate, fielded seven chances faultlessly and stole two bases. Playground will continue Monday Mon-day and will close Wednesday or Thursday. The fourth quarter quar-ter schedule must be finished and the playoff in all leagues will take place. |
