Show COUNTY LIBRARY CENTER OPENING TO BESATURDAY Board of directors of the Salt Lake county library announce that the formal opening of the new center at Midvale will be held between 4:00 and 10:00 p.m. Saturday, August 9. No books will be circulated during the reception, which is for adults only. Music and refreshments re-freshments will be provided. Open house for children will be on the following Monday, August Aug-ust 11, from 12:00 noon to 5 p.m. The first library board was appointed by the county commissioners com-missioners April 1938. Library service was begun April 1939-Since 1939-Since then 695,000 books have been lent throughout the county, coun-ty, and 16,700 patrons have been registered as borrowers. The system, besides the new central building at 80 East Center Cen-ter street, Midvale, which will serve as county headquarters and library for Midvale city, has 19 branches open to the general public afternoons and evenings in the following locations: Bacchus, Bingham Canyon, Copperfield, Copperton, Draper, East Mill Creek, Garfield, Granger, Grang-er, Herriman, Holladay, Magna, Mill Creek, Riverton, Sandy (two branches), South Salt Lake (two branches), Taylorsville, Union, West Jordan. The new building, designed by Ashton and Evans, architects, and constructed as a WPA project, sponsored by the Salt Lake county coun-ty library board, cost approximately approxi-mately $70,000.00. Of this amount $45,000.00 was supplied from the library budgets of 1940-1941. It houses a large adult reading room; an attractive children's room with interesting features, such as a fire place and a large bay window upholstered seat; a small committee room for board meetings; librarian's office; and a large work and stack room. The structure is entirely fire proof and has such modern features fea-tures as a complete air conditioning condition-ing plant, fire proof vault, electric elec-tric book lift and large cement- I ed parking area. The library system is under the supervision of the following board of directors: Commissioner Commission-er Gwynne Page, president; Dr. Calvin S. Smith, secretary; Mrs. Alfred G. Gunn; Dr. C. N. Jensen; Jen-sen; Mayor C. J. Welch with Ruth Vine Tyler as librarian. Previous board members also responsible for the new building were former Commissioner J. R. Rawlins and former Mayor J. Hollis Aylett of Midvale. In the past two years 40,500 new books have been purchased and added to the new library. With the possible maximum revenue re-venue of one mill, the system has operated on a levy of three-tenths of one mill for 1939, seven-tenths for 1940 and six-tenths for 1941. ' - |
