Show THE ClUE OF LYNCH A determined effort is making to have another hearing before the Board of Pardons in the matter of the application appli-cation of James Lynch for the commutation commu-tation of his sentence from the death penalty to imprisonment for life He Is now under sentence of death the day set for the execution of the sentence being be-ing Friday January 8th The crime oC which he stands convicted is that of shooting Col Godfrey Prowse in the raid on the Sheep Ttanch gambling house in this city on the night of September Sep-tember 11 1000 It is claimed that the former hearing on this application did not bring out the full strength of Lynchs case as It is now known Judge Booth who presided pre-sided at the trial In which he was convicted con-victed District Attorney Elchnor who prosecuted and ten of the Jurors all of them who could be reached join In the appeal for commutation The guards at the penitentiary give Lynch credit for good service to the State in recent mutiny there and Jacobs and TVIIek ens two of the guards declare that Lynch saved their lives at that time These things point to the propriety ofa thorough hearing of his application to escape the death penalty We believe too that if the members of the Board would allow their minds to sway somewhat some-what to the side of acquiescence and hear with a disposition n to help their action would be approved by the I people peo-ple of this State For it Is certain that he deserves some recognition for hIs act In coining to the rescue and saving the lives of two o the Slates employees employ-ees in the prison and the public would not have the State show ingratitude for such service |
