Show THE SURVEYORGENERALS REPORT rite annual report of the Surveyor General of Utah Is a cheerful document of which too much cannot ho made It fcpcalts up for Utah In good style There is a steady and healthy growth in the State it says which way never more prosperous The opening up of Indian reservations to settlement new lines of railroads mining industries indus-tries reservoir and new enterprises of every kind will increase the population reclaim the aril lands bring in and make homes for a large number of settlers set-tlers who arc assured of a I good mild climate and a splendid market for all their products of farm orchard and pasture There still remains a large area of unsurveyed public domain in this State approximately onethird which Is being rapidly 1 settled upon and should be surveyed at the earliest prac tlcablc dale That is good talk and it will certainly have a good effect in favor of the State both in the Interior Department at Washington and with the public at large especially as it can all be easily verified as absolutely true The work of the office taxes the facilities facili-ties of the force and conveniences to keep up Additional appropriations are needed to keep up with the demands of the t public and especially is a safe or vault needed to store away valuable papers pa-pers the destruction of which it would requite years to replace What the SurvcyooGenerul says In regard to the need of verification and restoration of themineral monuments I is true there has been both carelessness and neglect as lo these and it is high time that a systematic reestablishment reestablish-ment of them all were made And when he refers to the awkwardness of compelling com-pelling surveys to be made to conform to erroneous lines that were run in early days thus in fact falsifying the plats he but pleads for a better system and for a reform which all the mineral surveyors long to see put into effect Vhat is needed in the districts affected Is a rectlficaion of all the lines l and a standard plat front which definite points could always be taken The work of the SurveyorGenerals office has been well conducted anu much has been done during the year covered by the report The prospect is with the opening of the country by new railroads and the settlement of the Vin tah reservation that the work will be materially increased in the immediate future and it will all tend to the growth of Utah and to the material increase of population and wealth |
