Show MISTAKEN FOR BEER Jesse Hodges Fatally Wounded While OIL a HUnting Trip in Pergus County Montana TRIBUNE SPECIAL Great Falls Mont Sept InThe llrst fatality of the deer season In Fer gus county occurred this morning when Jesse Hodges well known in this city iccclved a mortal shot from the gun carried by Mellle Baker his chum Hodges went up on the mountain around Baker and other members 01 the hunting parly After a few moments mo-ments Nellie Baker saw the bushes within a few rods of him move and the next instant sighted a grayishlooking object which he took for a deer and Instantly in-stantly llred A cry greeted the shot and when he ran to the spot It was to find that he had sent a bullet through the body of Hodges one of his most intimate in-timate friends The bullet which was from a SOSO I rllle and of the softnose sort which expands after It strikes a body Inflicted In-flicted a terrible wound entering the middle of the back just to the left 01 the spinal column and coming out Just above the heart and then carrying away a piece of the left arm Mumborsof the party Secured blan kels I at tlie camp constructed a rude but comfortable litter and commenced the slow journey to the camp two miles distant It was necessary to cut a clean path for the passage of the litter and as snow covered the ground to a depth 01 several Inches It was 5 oclock in the atternoon before they reached the camp Shortly after arriving there Hodges died The accident was probably due to the fact that he was wearing a gray coat and cap Through the t bushes laden with snow the color closely resembled that of a deer |
