Show PERIL OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN I Miraculous Escape of Three Ladies and Two Babies in a Runaway SmashUp on Main Street rh I A clattering of hoofs a crash astwo vehicles met a series oCacroams three women and two babIes In white sum mcr alllrc pitching headlong into the street the commlnglirg of the two upsetting up-setting vehicles and two prostrate horses threatening to kick each other to death in their struggles lo escape All this occurred In front of tho White house on Main street yesterday afternoon in one of the most picturesque pic-turesque runaways to occur in this city for some time That there was loss of neither life nor limb may be considered providential It was at 310 oclock that OJIlccr Puck said to William Hlglcy of North Salt Lake at F C Lyngbercs East First South street store Better tic that horse up it may bo nipncy in your pocket Mr Hhjlcy took the hint but as he says on permission from Mr Lyngberg tied his horse and light two wheeled cart to a hind wheel of iyng bergs market wagon Instead of to a polo Then he went off < Presently the wind blew a column of smoke from the Hooper block chimney near by down Into tho street Higlcys mare took fright and making a plunge broke her bridle and like the Mrs Jane Bent of English tombstone epitaph epi-taph story kicked up her heels and away she went The runaway tore around GodbePltts corner smashing two street car headlights that had been set on the ground and falling down In a heap But struggling to her feet the marc dashed down Main street everybody giving her a wide berth At Main and Second South streets a twelveyearold girl on her wheel was misused by a handbreadth and the terrified ter-rified child proceeded to make herself very scarce A buggy driven by H A Thomas was struck and an axle sprung but the cart caromed off doing no further fur-ther damage The smashup occurred Just bej9nd In front of the White house with a two I seated surrey drawn by one horse In it were Mrs William A Snedaker of 3175 East Seventh South street and her llftccnmonthsold child Mrs Joseph Cecil of 1171 East Seventh South with her threemonths babe and Miss May Peatman of Ccntervllle la visiting with Mrs Snedaker They had been shopping and the surrey floor was well covered with plums onions tomatoes and packages of butter brown and white sugar and other groceries Mrs Snedakcr occupied the rear scat while the other two ladles were In front with Miss Peatman driving The surrey was going couth and the ladles were trying to turn out of the Way ns the flying horse and cart crashed into them The shock pitched them headlong into the street shielding the babies In their arms as best they could while the groceries and vegetables vegeta-bles went Hying all over the roadway Both horses went down the Illgloy marc turning completely around with tho cart crosswise atop of her the surrey sur-rey was partly over all and the horse on its side twisted over the shafts and both vehicles and animals locked rlght j In together Scores of people rushed to the wo mens assistance from all quarters among the first being Coy Wells and Charles Randall exSheriff McQueen Detective Sheets and Charles Wise man appeared to be the Ilrst to catch onto the kicking horses The ladles were found to be more frightened than hurt and thought more of the children than themselves They found refuge in the Chicago Northwestern office where General Agent Walker quickly cared for them before Mr Snedaker appeared to take them home Mrs Snedaker complained ot a slightly sprained back and bruised arm but that was all and the ladleswere thankful thank-ful for the narrow escape particularly of the babies who went on crowing Just as though nothing had happened The police cared for Hlgleys mare until he called later tc take her away Theanimal was badly cut on her hind legs and considerable of an effort was required to separate the two rigs The surrey escaped with a smashed rear wheel and HIgley loses his harness Lyngbcrg was thinking of buying the mare before the escapade but has singe changed his mind Later Mr HIgley settled with Mr Snedakcr at the lat ters solicitous request |
