exhibition of the Dcserot gr1cu1 ui rat and Manufacturing Manufactur-ing society closed last evening at about 10 oclock There was a very fair attendance at-tendance during the day but It was not I at all ecual to that of a year ago The rush that was expected from the advent I of conference visitors did not materialize material-ize There was plenty of room for all The receipts of the fair It is estimated will be about 1000 less than n year ago Looking over the events at the fairgrounds fair-grounds the past few days It may be fjald that in many respects the show just closed was the best ever given by the society but It has been attended by more dissension and illwill between be-tween Judges directors supervisors and other officials than has ever characterized character-ized any previouc show There has been a constant misunderstanding between 1 be-tween those who should work In harmony har-mony with each other I for the good of the State and the society Yesterday in order to help out the treasury there was a street parade and a fairly good one but only after those who were expected and asked to take part had waited around the grounds for a couple of hours for the band the members of which were in banel blissful ignorance of the fact that their services would be wanted at 12 oclock Instead of 2 As a result of this many of those who had Intended to exhibit took their stock back to the barns and made no showing at all As a matter air of dls of fact there was n general nil fiatisfaction and demoralization almost everywhere No one apparently cared whether school kept or not There Is every Indication that this will be the hint fair that will be held c by I all the men who are now In control The resignation of President Winder Is absolute Director White sajR he has J 1 good reasons for handing In his name and asking for a successor to be appointed ap-pointed Director Conrad was similarly Inclined yesterday unless he Bald we can get a man of good executive ability to succeed President Winder The day has gone past when a show like this can be run In a slipshod manner man-ner and If I we want to succeed we must adopt modern methods I I remain In the society remarked Supervisor Palfreyman of the horse department de-partment there has got to be a change In more than one office This Is absolutely abso-lutely necessary Wo certainly need a strong man at the head of the association asso-ciation ciaton John 31 White was yesterday asked whether he would take the position to be made vacant by the retirement of President Winder Not on your life was the answer So far no other name has been mentioned men-tioned for the soontobevacated position po-sition StNDAY FAIR SQUELCHED I The Idea that the fair should be kept open on Sunday In order that several thousand people should be able to see what the Slate Institution had gathered together and for which they are paying their money created a sensation among those who were opposed to It and they put In tho entire morning In obtaining the objections of such directors as they could against It In order to save the calling of a meeting at which It was proposed the matter should be dls cusrcd r cusfcd Had the question been left to the r vole of the people on the grounds there would seem to have been no doubt but that It would have carried as there was a great sentiment In favor of It and early in the day a petition was gotten ready to be circulated asking that the fair be kept open today The objectors however all of whom were I members of the society had taken time by the forelock and had L major Hy of the directors pledged to oppose the keeping open of the gates thus II making the petition useless President Winder put his objection on the ground that the fair had been I advertised to close on Saturday even Ing and he thought it was always better I bet-ter to do a was promised Asked a to whether he did not think that It would be n good idea looking at It merely from a selfish standpoint to get a few more dollars into the treasury he said there would be no dellclt that he would retire from office with a few dol lars In the treasury to show the next legislature hI would rather he said die In the harness than go out with an empty treasury or n deficit t However it is undeniable that the fair of 1900 will show less I gate receipts I than any one for n long time past SOUTHERN UTAH FRUIT
