Show HOT r TiME IN GAUGUS I I Republican Councilmen Hold j a Conference r I I I NO DECISION IS REACHED II I I The Members from the Fifth Precinct Pre-cinct Reinforced by Buckle Insisted In-sisted that the Councilmen from Each Precinct Should Have a Voice in the Selection of Subordinates in the Various Departments Opposed to Second Precinct Members who Simply Favored Equal Division The Impending storm In the City Council broke loose at a caucus of the Republican members and bonds of departments de-partments last evening The meeting had been called for the purpose of giving giv-ing the Republican majority an opportunity oppor-tunity to confer with the heads of departments de-partments respecting subordinate appointments ap-pointments and there was a reasonably warm time Those present were Councilmen Buckle Buck-le Robertson Gemmell Thomas Hewlett Hew-lett Canning and Cottrell City Engineer Engi-neer Kelsey Superintendent of Waterworks Water-works Hines and City Sexton Carter CHARGE OP ANTICONDIB MEN The antlCondle contingent charged that Condle remained away from the meeting in order that he might not bo compelled to commit himself In the matter of appointments Considerable feeling was also aroused in view of the fact that Westerlleld Nebeker and Erlckson were absent Robertson Gemmell and Buckle took the ground that each head of a department depart-ment should be required to submit his list of appointees in each precinct to the Councilmen from that precinct for approval In order that men might be selected who had rendered the best service ser-vice to the party The Second precinct members opposed op-posed this and Insisted that the appointments ap-pointments bo simply amicably apportioned appor-tioned between the various precincts Xo definite action was taken however In view of the absence of Condle whose department employs the largest num tier of men ROBERTSONS PLAIN TALK Robertson openly charged the Second precinct with an attempt to run the entire city government and llnally made a sarcastic motion that the entire en-tire question of patronage be left to the members from the Second This motion was JOt seconded Owing to the absence of Condie Weslerlleld and Erickson It was finally decided to hold another meeting at 3 oclock this afternoon at which the sub ject of patronage will be more fully discussed ONEFILTH FOR SCANDINAVIANS During the evening A Lawson was allowed to address the caucus with reaped re-aped to the claims of the Scandinavian Republicans Mr Lawson asked that onefifth of the patronage be bestowed upon the Scandinavians under the direction di-rection of the Scandinavian Republi can club which could be held rcspons Ible for the men appointed This was tacitly agreed to although no ote was taken |
