Show GHAPTER iii UHIS Lift Dead Man Said to Have Been a Forger SUICIDE THEORY ADVANCED r Mr Rich for Whom the Expert Accountant Ac-countant Had Worked Since February Febru-ary Last Says That TJhl Secured Fully S3000 From Him Through Forgeries and Thefts LThl Also Deceived De-ceived His YIfes Family as to Purchase of His Home UhPs Immediate Im-mediate Family Seem Indifferent if I Mrs Daisy Uhl has a double burden to bear When her husband Hugo II Uhl tho young expert accountant met death so suddenly Thursday morning she was overcome with grief Whatever I What-ever may have been Uhls shortcomings I shortcom-ings in a business sense his home life seemed ideal and his young wife together to-gether with the members of her family fam-ily grieved as only those can who lose a loved one But now while the watchers arc still beside the young mans coffin in a darkened room of the ruined home the heartbroken wife is brought face to i face with the awful charge that her husband was a defaulter and that his death only hastened the revelation of his offenses The man who charges HJfco W TJhl with having been a thief and forger is 3D E Rich of the Peoples Forwarding company by whom Ihl had been emPlOYed em-ployed since February last CHARGED WITH FORGERY 1 did all I could to shield the lad said Mr Rich last evening because I had not the remotest idea that the amount he had taken was more than 200 or 300 1 did not know last night that he had actually taken the money but suspected so because oC his high living Now however that tho amount has assumed such serious proportions I feel as though all considerations for the dead should be thrown aside and I the absolute truth told Hugo Uhl has stolen by forged check and otherwise as near as I can now tell fully 3000 His system mainly was as follows The checks are numbered consecutively consecutive-ly of course It was his habit T found tills morning to abstract from the checkbook one sheetor three checks at a time stubs and all It was on these that he forged my name Of COUlse they went through the bank all right because the forgery was a clever one Then when they came back at the end of the month he would takeout take-out the forged checks and destroy them This left the checks apparently returned by the bank equal to the number of tho tubs in the book Then nsruln he would take checks that might r come In for the payment of bills inJorsc them with the rubber slump usually used and cash them at any bank he chose to Credit would be usually given these checks but he failed to make the entry of the payment pay-ment In the little book which we keep for that purpose There were half a I dozen other ways by which he got hold of small amounts and the fact that there seemed to me to be somewhat of a discrepancy between the amount of money In the bank and what r imagined im-agined should be there did not give me much uneasiness because we are liable to have several thousand dollars outstanding at any time I CLEVER BIT OF YORK The forgery of my name was a clever clev-er bit of work and was easily accepted by the bank ofiicials It was only by i the use of the microscope this morning that we discovered it as we went through the checks at the bank It appears that Uhl had obtained my signature sig-nature by tearing it off one of the old checks nnd then tracing It on others No I do not care to say who the firms are that have handled the paper but there Is a whole lot of them During I the examination made at the bank this morning we found fortytwo forged checks There arc probably tenor ten-or twelve more to hear from I learned this morning also that when he presented a check made payable pay-able to himself to a prominent business busi-ness house he was questioned In a goodnatured way about it and replIed In his offhand manner that It was all right that his father had sent him inoney by which he had purchased a half interest in the company This story he told on more than one occasion Dr Estcs who gaves the certificate that death resulted from heart failure said last evening that he was not called Into the case until after death and all he had Lo go on was the symptoms as described by his wife who it appears ap-pears was the only person present when ho died and the further story that ho had all his life been afflicted with heart trouble Now however he had no idea but that the deceased had committed stdcldc but by wheat means only an autopsy would probably determine deter-mine The violent convulsions described by his wife said the doctor might have been caused by strychnine as that poison usually acted In that way WIFES FAMILY INDIGNANT Mrs Louisa Knowlden the mother of Mrs Uhl and her son Fred Knowlden were very indignant last evening when they learned of the charges made by Mr Rich against the dead man Why said Mr Knowlden 1 always thought that Mr Rich would do anything any-thing in the world for Uhl and now that the young man Is dead and no possible good can result from the exposure I ex-posure I am surprised that It has been made I know of my owri knowledge that Rich gave him a check for 100 when he was married as I cashed the check for him I It appears however that Uhl deceived de-ceived his wife and her family as well as hlw employer At the time of his marriage to Miss Knowldcn he told her brother that his father a Cleveland capitalist had sent him 2000 and that he paid 1800 of the amount to R E McConauRhy fQr the home to which ho look his bride Uhl also told bin brotherinlaw that he had then mortgaged mort-gaged the place for 300 to secure mono with which to pay for the furnishings fur-nishings FORGERY CHARGED AGAIN Mr McConaughy says that he sold the place to Uhl on a contract Uhl having borrowed the 900 which went to McConaughy and that the young man agreed to pay a stipulated sum monthly until the 300 additional was paidOnly Only a few payments have been made said Mr McConaughy last night and the last one of 5S5 is i rep resented by a check which TJhl gave mo on December 17th The checlc bore the name E E Rich but Mr Rich claims that It is a forgery I will of I course Investigate the matter Uhl always al-ways gave me to understand that ho was financially Interested with Mr RichSAY I SAY IT WAS NOT SUICIDE The members of Mrs Uhls family are also indignant Qver the suggestion that the young man IZtay have committed com-mitted suicide and they rcpcvt the statement that he linn suffered with heart dltseaso for several yearn and that lie attack which ended his life WHB similar to others that he had BUt toned except of courne that it was more 5eJCQLajld resulted fatally It is 1 do I V I I I also said that the dead map looks as If he had sunply fallon Into a peaceful I 11 sleep which would doubtless not be the case had ho taken strychnine I The relatives of the dead man who reside In Cleveland 0 do not appear to be unduly exercised over bin den Lh although Bruno Uhl a broThor telegraphed tele-graphed yesterday that he had forwarded for-warded 50 to assist in defraying the funeral expenses Mrs Uhls mother said last night that they do not deem an inquest or postmortem necessary and that neither would be held |
