For ten years preparations have been underway I under-way for this meeting known aa the ecumenical conference on foreign missions mis-sions IL Is the third of Its kind over held Every branch of the Christian church Is represented except the Roman Ro-man Catholic tho Greek and that branch of the Anglican church known as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel The great hall was completely session was dEvoted to the report of time general committee prc I Eoniud by the Rov S L Baldwin D D 1 secretary of the committee The foreign missionary work of the world Is conducted by seven great societies so-cieties They aro the Christian Missionary Mis-sionary society which represents the Evangelical party lu the Church of England and is almost as large as the other six together the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel l ting t-ing tho Catholic party In the Church of England and which declined to attend the conference the London Missionary society of the Congregational church the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions the missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal chinch and the American Baptist Missionary union MILLIONS SPENT ANNUALLY The Protestant foreign missionary societies of Lime world spend about 15 000000 a year exclusive of money expended ex-pended on missions in England and America Every cent of this vast sum Is ufced to convert nonChristians to Christianity This great work was Ural started In the close of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nlnej teenth The conference now In session r Is held at the close of this century as a filling time and to make way for the great work of time century about to dawn PURPOSE OF GATHERING As slated by one of the leaders the one great purpose of thla gathering of workers from all corners of the earth Is to look back over Iho l century clos ing and to survey and prospect the work of the future The greal problem now Is how to get money and then how to get thc greatest great-est portion
