Show GREMATORYIS BURNED Frame Portion of it is Destroyed De-stroyed EMPLOYEES NARROW ESCAPE r j r I i I The Structure Caught Fire Last I Evening and Before Firemen Could I I Reach the Scene the Flames Had Gained Such Headway that the Combustible Portion Could Not be I SavedHouse and Barn Belonging to William Bartling on Tenth South is Burned I I I j i J 1 Salt Lakes crematory crematedIt I self last night The frame buildings I of the plant which is located a half mile north of the Warm Springs were entirely destroyed and Joseph Armstrong Arm-strong who operates the plant had a narrow escape from being Incinerated with I the place Fire broke out In the roof oC the twostory main building about 830 ocloik While it is unknown just how the blaze started It was probnbly I canned by flying sparks from the smokestack smoke-stack of thu cremating furnace The upper part of the structure was well in flaims when Armstrong who was working near the furnace discovered life lire He rushed quickly upstairs turned on the water faucet and started j cd to make his exit by the south door which Fends out onto the mountain However the heat on that side was so Intense that lie had to retrace his steps and get out through a north door onto the tramway Ills luiJr was singed before he l sol safely out but otherwise he was unscathed The entire building was soon Inflames In-flames tIme fire being fiercest in f that part of the building over the furnace I A telephone alarm was sent in to station No 2 which repaired hastily j I to the scene But when the apparatus arilvod the buildings were doomed A slrcam of water was played on the conflagration con-flagration but that did little to check the flames After the wooden build ings reached the ground the fireman turned their attention to an area of burning garbage Tho crematory was creeled In the latter part of 1S03 and cost originally 12000 It was of two stories in height so arranged that a wagon loaded load-ed with garbage could drive up the hillside dump the rnnlenls directly Into the furnace and then go down the hill it was constructed under the supervision of the late M II Beards ley who was thon at the head of the Sanitary committee of the City Council I Coun-cil and with him was associated Dr I Beatty the then Health Commissioner There was considerable objection raised to it at the time because of the fact that St Maries hospital was to be erected In that vicinity and it was supposed that the fumes from the furnace would also prove to be objec tionable to its patrons and also those I of the Warm Springs As the portion I damaged yesterday was the wood l rvvork only Ihc loss to the city will not be very heavy The lirst story in which the furnace is located lb of Iron and brick and this was scarcely damaged dam-aged at all The crematory has for some time been too small for ihe demands upon it and it is now thought probable that the size will be Increased Dr Boatty l said last night that a furnace of twice > tlie size of the one that has been used could now be bought for about half the price that the latter cost I |
