| Show OBSERVED AT ALGIERS Fine Conditions the Observation at Algiers Algiers May fThe lUpsc was observed here under fine conditions The sky was almost cloudlens and the atmosphere almost transparent although al-though not of the deep blue usually associated with the Mediterranean Observing parties were here from Bag land France Germany Italy and Switzerland the largest being the British whoso best observations were taken from the roof of the Hotel le la Regencc As the totality approached Lhe effect was weird Darkness swept the earth the sea lost Its deep blue and took a neutral gray tint tvcea became funeral purple When the last ray of surlight faded the corona Instantly shone forth unusually large and brilliant extending extend-ing to Mercury shining with Intensq white luster two degfees away The shape of the corona was almost exactly that of the eclipse of iSiS as seen In the United States namely twQ great wings one shooting almost vertically I ver-tically upward and the other downward down-ward both almost exactly on a solar equator The photographic programme was completely carried Out by Prof Walter M Auntler of the Royal observatory at Greenwich and hla assistants The atmospheric glare present was unfavorable unfa-vorable to photographs of the outer coronas streamers or of the partial 1 phase Most interesting observations of the shadow bands however were obtained The bands traveled In tlio same direction both before and after the eclipse not In continuous lines but in square spots like a passing hock of birds This eclipse was observed by more Europeans than any other in the century cen-tury The natives at the totality all howled while on the return of the light their yelling was something terrific re sombling applause more violent and noisy than anything ever hoard among Europeans > Tripoli reports the eclipse expedition under Prof Todd of Amherst college completed successful observations with twenty telescopes ineluding n twenty fourinch telescope The corona was seen for41 tytvo seconds and was an exact duplicate of that of January 1880 completely confirming the eleven years period of the corona variation with the sun spots The weather was splendid At Ovar Portugal the duration of the totality was under three seconds The thermometer dropped four degrees The planet Mercury was pMainly visi ble Despite some clouds excellent negatives were obtained of the corona which differed little from that observed during the last cpllpsc In India |
