| Show STOGKVEN ETAUATE it Propose to Fight Germany on the Meat Bill BILL TO PROTECT INDUSTRY Li One Introduced in the House Which Empowers the President to Increase In-crease the Duties 10 Per Cent oa Articles Manufactured or Produced in the German Empire When Entered En-tered for Consumption at the Ports of the United States in Excess of Duties Now Imposed Washington May 23As a result of conferences today between President J W Sprirger of Denver of the National Na-tional LiveStock association and members of Congress relative to thin German meat Inspection bill the following fol-lowing bill was Introduced in the House of Representatives by K pro sentatlvo Bailey of Kansas That whenovcr ihe President nf the United States shall be Informed thut the Government of the German empire has passel a law Imposing prohibitory t duties nn meat products which may bo Imported into that country from the United States he shall issue a proclamation procla-mation fixing a time hen all articles produced or manufactured In the German Ger-man empire when enlered for consumption con-sumption at the portn of the United States shall pay l a duty of 10 per cent In excess of the duties Imposed thereon prior to the passage of this act and all such products and manufactures when so entered for consumption after said time fixed by I the President nhall pay such Increased duties The bill was referred to the Ways and Means committee and Mr Springer Spring-er saw members of that committee with a view to urging early action Ho said as to the measure The National LiveStock nssocU llon Is the largest organization of Its j kind In the world representing over i 600000000 and with It are federated on this subject the American Short hornBreeders association the National Nation-al HerefordBreeders association and some hundred llveslock organizationS We feel that the livestock Industry Is singled out by the German empire for direct discrimination and all the stock people will feel the effect of such action They feel too that tile tlmo has come for the allied stock Interests of the United States to speak out In no uncertain tones and they hope tc direct the attention of Congress and the Government to the situation All the livestock Staten are deeply Interested Inter-ested In what la being done and are desirous of having adequate measures adopted to overcome this discrimination discrimina-tion by Germany |
