Show BRYAN THEIR CHOICE PENNSYLVANIA DEMOCRATS SET PACE FOR DEMOCRACY First Time in the History of the I Keystone State when Party has Indicated In-dicated Preference in Advance Ilarrlsburg Pa Jan 25Time State Democratic committee set tIme pace for time Democracy of the other States lo I day by making Col William J Bryan its choice for the Presidency In 1900 This action was taken by the committee commit-tee while Col Bryan was on his way lo Harrisburg from New York lo attend at-tend time meeting and confer with the party leaders This la probably the first time In the partys history that the Democrats of Pennsylvania have indicated their choice for President In advance of the State convention Thero was a large attendance of Democrats from over the State to meet Col Bryan Bry-an and hear him discuss the Issues oa which the coming campaign will be waged i The State convention will be held In this city on April olh and will adopt < 21 platform along the lines laid down i by the Nebraska orator in his speech tonight The platform will Indorse time Chicago declaration of principles de nouncu the trusts and Imperialism advocate ad-vocate ballot reform and pure elections and condemn machine politics The convention will also nominate candidates candi-dates for AuditorGeneral Congress I manatLarge and Presidential eke toms and elect eight delegatesatlarge to the national convention Col Bryan reached hero at Z oclock and was escorted to time Board of Trade I I rooms where the State committee was In session by a committee representing the Slate and local Democratic com mlttees He was Introduced to the assemblage as-semblage by Stale Chairman Billing and made a short speech which was received with much enthusiasm When I come to talk to Eastern Democrats he said I feel It Is my duty lo give them every assistance I I can and to tell them that wo appreciate appre-ciate lIme odds they havo to contend i against It Is easy to bea Democrat In the South and It Is easier to be a I Democrat in the West than It used to be I believe time time will come when the Chicago platform Democracy will I I be as popular In Pennsylvania as It Is out In Nebraska While no Republl j can can remember what was In the Republican platform of iSOG and whllo no gold Democrat can repeat the In i dlanapolis platform every Democrat and Republican can remember the Chicago Chi-cago platform The Democrats ought to make progress pro-gress In this State because the Republican Repub-lican parly Is more corrupt In this State than In any other Stale In time Union Unless the people have forgotten forgot-ten lo think and act for themselves they ought to rise up and wipe time Republican party out of existence If the voters of tIme Democrallc party speak now as Ihey did in 9C they will send men lo the national convention I who will write a platform like that of the Chicago declaration of principles I believe we are going to win In the campaign of 1900 Time young men who are corning to vote this year for the flrst time arc beginning to believe that the Republican party Is a good thing for the monopoly and a poor thing for tho young man who as things arc goIng go-Ing now can only hope to be a poor clerk for some monopoly At the close of the meeting ho held an Informal reception at the Commonwealth Common-wealth hotel and later he was the guest of Mayor Fritchey at a dinner party at which Col Guffey Chairman Killing and other party leaders wore present After tonights meeting he attended a session of the local lodge of Modern Woodmen of which he Is an active member at his home In Lincoln Col Brvau will go from here to Smyrna and Wilmlnjjton Del and from there to Washington to meet the national leaders lead-ers |
