Show Michigan is becoming a sugar making Stale The Chicago Tribune publishers the report of George E Gunn the Michigan Labor Commissioner I Commis-sioner who has made n canvass of the I Industry and he reports nine plants in different sectIons of the Stale They have a capital stock of 2850000 while the cost has been in the aggregate 3020000 At full capacity they require re-quire 307f > tons of beets dally they employ 1310 persons an average of 150 I each For the season of 1899 there were contracted for 10070 acres of beets the contractors numbered 13181 an average of about three acres to each contractor At first there was much trouble tho farmers were suspicious the projectors knew nothing about the I business but matters were finally adjusted ad-Justed and now most of those who planted boots last year will sow larger acreage this season The value of the different soils the conditions of planting plant-Ing and other data are being care fully studied and every indication points to Michigan Inking rank among the great beet sugarproducing centers |
