Show HE E HAD TO SURRENDER I 1 1 Admiral Dewey Capitulates to Little Tots GIVES UP IN ST LOUIS I I i Thousands of SundaySchool Children I Chil-dren Give the Hero of Manila a Warm Welcome In the Mound City j They Sing Patriotic Songs In His HonorMissouri Metropolis Presents Pre-sents the Admiral and Mrs Dewey with a Magnificent Punch Bowl I t Entertained at a Banquet r j I St Louie Mo April ITen I lliousaiil Sundayschool children waving 10000 American fines cheered and sang j sacred and patriotic songs In honoi of I Admiral Dewoy at the public reception I at the exposition building today Tho song service which was the last or I a series of luncheons and informal receptions re-ceptions that took ui the time of Admiral Ad-miral Dewey and Mrs Dewey from early In the day took place this afternoon after-noon at a public reception given In the big building In which four years ago President McKinley was nominated and was attended by an audience that packed tho edifice almost to suffocation I lion tionThe The two days celebration In honor I of Admiral Deucy began his morning I with i short Informal reception on the lloor of the Merchants Exchange trading trad-ing being entirely suspended In the pit during the visit of the distinguished I guests This reception was limited to members of the exchange and their j j I I families but the big hall and galleries J around It wero packed when a wild I J I cheer announced the arrival of Admiral i i and Mrs Dewey and the remainder of I tho Admirals partq I Immediately after the reception at I v tho exchange the party took carriages and wcre driven along the boulevards and private driveways leading through tho beautiful residence district of the west end and thence to Forest park Near the entrance to the park Just opposite op-posite the Blair monument the Admirals I I Admir-als carnage was stopped for a moment mo-ment while a hundred girl students of Forest Park university presented him with an immense bunch of American I beauty roses and Lrae their college yell In response to his thanks The drive along lie park boulevards was a continual ovation for the Admiral At 1 p m the party was driven to the University club for luncheon and an informal in-formal reception and shortly after 3 i the carriages were driven to the exposition expo-sition building for the public reception For hours a crowd Inside the building numbering fully 20000 including the Sundayschool children had waited patiently pa-tiently the coming of Admiral Dewey while thousands of others denied axl mlttance filled for blocks the streets leading Into the building The Admiral was greeted with wild cheering by the crowd outside but his real reception came when the children Inside the building saw him walking down tho steps leading to the section reserved for the Admirals party In an Instant every person in lie building was standing up shouting and clietrlng while In the hands of the frantic children chil-dren the waving Hags looked like a sea of the National colors Then led by Bufunnos band 100M childish voices started The Red White and Blue the children at the same tlmo waving their nags The song was at once taken up by nearly every person per-son In tho building even the Admiral standing and holding a small Hag in his hand lotnlncr Then Amiilca was sung In this too everybody Joined and as the gripd words of the national anthem rang out In a tremendous volume of music the Admiral visibly agitatcd bowed his acknowledgments right and left At the conclusion of the song two little lit-tle children of JJandmaster Bufunno presented to the Admiral a silk flag and to il Irs Dev y a portfolio of the songs of the children printed on nhite silk Then the Admiral surrendered Taking the children in his arms In kissed thorn heartily and thanked them while the thousands of loss fortunate for-tunate youngsters looked on and in shrill voices yelled their delight Two more songs Columbia and Dixie bi ought thv Admiral to attn lion und started the cheering agan At their conclusion the Admiral and party were driven to the Planters hu tol i and from then until S oclock Admiral Ad-miral and Mrs Dewey remained in thylr apartments The last and most notable of lie ro clnl features In connection with the two days celebration occurred tonight when a banouet was glv i at tho Planters hotel In honor of Admiral and Mrs Dewey and a magnificent silver punch bowl the gift of citizens of St Louis was presented to the Admiral The banquet hlch was by invitation only was one of the most elaborate e > r held home The tables pot for 200 guests wcre laden with cut llowers of all kinds At the conclusion of the banquet Right Ke Bishop Daniel S Tuttle arose ird In a few words of praise of the Admirals deeds presented In behalf be-half of the city of St Louis the punchbowl punch-bowl and ladle Admiral Dewey did ijot attempt lo pmke a speech in reply slmpl thanking tho people of SL Louis warmly for their kindness |
