Show I MINING TOWN DESTROYED r I SANDON B C IS WIPED OUT BY FIRE Twelve Hundred People Rendered Homeless and Ruined Financial Loss Estimated at 8500000 Kaslo B C May ISandon 1 the second miningstown of Importance in the Slocan has been completely destroyed de-stroyed by fire and nearly all of its 1200 people are homeless and ruined Kaslo Is twentyeight miles from Sandon but about midnight large clouds of smoke came rolllhg over this town from Sandon At once word went out that Sandon was destroyed but no news could be had from the desolate deso-late town as all wires had been burned At 1 p l in a train came In from Sandon bringing a number of those who lost all their property They reported re-ported that the total loss was between S500000 and > OCOOOO 1 while the Insurance Insur-ance could only have been about 525 000The The alarm was sounded shortly after af-ter midnight and quickly tho streets were filled with hundreds ol men and women The flames started between Spencers ball and Browns store Two streams seemed to hold the flames lu cheek for a while Then one stream gave out and the flames spread rapid ly l After that t It was only a matter of the fire burning Itself out The miners hospital and a drug store were blown up In the effort to stop the flames By this time all the lower part of town including the tender loin and many business places were gone Then the firemen blew up the Echo hotel one of the finest buildings in the Kootenay country the C P railroad station and other buildings In order to save the valuable stores of H Gclgerlch and H Byers Co This was accomplished Half a dozen oth or buildings In the extreme ends of the town were saved Including the electric powerhouse The rest of the town was drawn Into the maelstrom of iame Relief measures were takon quickly I Thin officials of Sandon donated Si00 and mining men there I contributed 53000 Kuslo raised 1800 and sent up a special train with largo supplies of food tents and clothing More relief Is needed needodItI Mining Town Burned Victoria B C May lThe chief portion of the mining town of Sandon East Kootenay was destroyed bv fire today The railway station and tele graph office were bUrn d Sandon is I In the center of tho sil verlead mining district l of British Co lumbia and was a thriving town |
