pawing horses stand before the doors of the famous I dressmakers the strident horns of automobiles au-tomobiles warn Imprudent pedestrians to keep out of the way and Justly the fashionable crowd is hypnotized by the sparkling diamonds and Jewels In the shop windows One is everywhere charmed with the Ingenious and beautiful beau-tiful novelties exhibited by the different differ-ent tradesmen After the dangerous crossing of the Place de 1Opern which is ever in motion mo-tion like the waves of the sea the pretty Rue de la Palx is like a harbor of refuge The crowd a moment since hurried and bustling Is calm polite and amiable ng though there emanated ema-nated from the supreme refinement of the surroundings an ambient air of po HleneHs and courtesy It Is a veritable verita-ble promenade for at every step the a eye Is caught by some marvel to be admired Here Is a somewhat discursive account ac-count of the two hours spent in wandering wan-dering about the most brilliant artery oC Pnrlslnn CashlOlL Illiimlnn by fin I Tun J mild rays of the beautiful autumn sun To begin with there Is a whole shop window filled with Instruments of precision pre-cision such as watches clocks eyeglasses eye-glasses thermometers compasses and barometers all of them charming The eyeglasses have long handles of translucent trans-lucent enamel and are decorated with the most galant designs They are more novel less fragile and quite as pretty as handles of Dresden or Scvres porcelain The tortoiseshell fare a mains Is superseded by the double gold rimmed lorgnon with a handle of the same metal STOLE FOR THE BELLE OTERO Close by Is the dazzling exhibition of I the adornment of one of the most reputed 1 re-puted foreign ballerlnes a trellis work of gold starred with diamonds sapphires and emeralds forming a point at the bottom of the back rising in the form of braces over the shoulders shoul-ders and forming a bolero over the corsage like unto a coat of mall of precious stones Then In the midst of I a display of a thousand tempting trifles I notice a postage stamp box of engraved crystal The transparency of the material enables me to distinguish distin-guish the contents of the many compartments com-partments This charming object is mounted on chased bronzo stand in the Empire style The art nouveau harmonizes de lightfully with the Empire style and 1 admire a fan with mountings of mother of pearl and gold with modern designs spangled with gold set upon gauze Then there are flowers which lack nothing but scent I notice a large toque entirely of dog roses which seems striking homage to the refined taste of the Empress of Russia whose favorite flower It Is Another toque composed of gigantic sprays of edelweiss edel-weiss Is equally original After a famous perfumer comes a brilliant series of Jewelers In all branches I am an enthusiastic admirer ad-mirer of the riviere form ho felicitous ly replaced by the undulating form of a serpent The cut stones look like the rings of tho terrible reptile The eyes are rubles and the heads marked ban b-an enormous emerald Next I admire an umbrella handle representing an admirably chased gold chimera holding In its claws a monstrous mon-strous baroque pearl A little further on I find sautolrs of rose diamonds set in platinum others of pearls the regularity which is broken by larger stones or brightcol ored stones resembling the paters of a rosary or1 elso composed of links of colored enamel as brilliant as gems That living casket of Jewels the peacock pea-cock serves as a theme for the most dazzling fancies on the part of the lapidaries I noticed a neck ornament in incrusted enamel representing two I pins crossed like hatpins and arrows with diamond feathers etc In the way of rings I saw many with very large stones set In old style on a plain round ring This enables people peo-ple to wear several on the same finger The marquise ring i Is superseded by the auricular and rings for the forefinger of cry large dimensions are coming more and more into favor A new pendant I should mention It I it composed oftiny camels carved in Jet rivaling tho white elephant so much recommended by Mme de Thebes What can one think of this new fetich I FROM JEWELRY TO UNDERLINEN In the midst of all this symphony of color comes the dainty grace of the underllncn shops Very pretty are the cambrIc handkerchiefs In two colors pink In the center and four corners white incrusted with pink designs Then as a contrast a whole series of black and white recalling to mind the Jourdes Morts Besides them are pretty attractive at-tractive Lastly I came foa window filled with mysterious figures foreign scented provisions and I stop at that former desert the enormous Place Verdome which fashion niaglclanllke has re peopled within the last few months I do not stop here however I content con-tent myself with watching the carriage wheel round the foot of the bronze column col-umn and disappear In the background formed by the Tullerles garden I cross the road and spend a long time in com templatlon before the shop of one of the master Jewelers Where I find a tendency tenden-cy to still further ornament the two places at the bust where the sautolr entwines On a very simple chain I notice beautifully beau-tifully executed bunches grapes with 1 foliage twined The grapes are formed of pink rubies of a very pretty color This innovation will certainly take and will be extended to all kinds of artistic combinations Then comes dress pure and simple stylish toilets childrens costumes of pink velvet covered with guipure with a corset brassiere supporting the I chest yet more Jewels pins headed with a seagull the body in enamel and the wings In precious stones and then comes tho disquieting seduction of tur-quoises set with brilliants mounted on flexible wires placed like a diadem Inn in-n splendid head of hair they would look like the antennae of a marvelous butterfly but-terfly telOAnother Another perfection of comfort represented by an ingenious folding table ta-ble that can be used while In bed for the happiness of the fair Idlersi t and convalescents I also admire the wise precaution of wrapping the handles of metal cups with leather Nothing can be more odious than an unexpected contact with heated metal Everything teaches something here I I 1 I learn that the fetich for December is the pearl and I find a fine Orient pearl enshrined in a nugget of gold a charming charm-ing pendant that can be varied twelve times a year I am still pursued by the oppressive vision of marvelous Jewels In all Forms applied to all uses in life Here I see a rock crystal paper weight in the form of a snail there a double eyeglass mounted In ivory with delicately carved garlands of flowers As I
