Show THE NEW NEED OF IRRIGATION The argument for irrigation is fa mllar to all readers of The Tribune and to allGUI Intermountain people The wonderful reaches of our Western territory ter-ritory and its I established richness when once a sufficient supply of water is applied to it are familiar to all Irrigation Ir-rigation has long been of admitted value val-ue as an economic asset of local Importance Impor-tance all through the arid country It Is of Its Importance to the whole nation na-tion that we now wish to say a word or two We are the greatest exporting people In the world We export something like onequarter of what we produce of things grown and manufactured That means that but for our immense export trade our producers and their Investments Invest-ments whether farmer miner or man ufactyrer would be Idle a quarter of the time We must then continue to export our agricultural products and I our manufactured goods Indeed expansion ex-pansion which Is I the more Irresistible because It Is commercial and not merely mere-ly military political and social must move forward more and more rapidly by son momentum for not to grow Is I to be at a standstill and to be at a standstill is to decay The foundation of our country lies non n-on active and profitable agriculture That Is at once the prerequisite and test of business activity In all lines since the prosperous farming community com-munity reaches the busy moneymaking moneymak-ing town and the prosperous town expresses ex-presses as It were the advancing activities I ac-tivities of the surrounding farming I i I r community In the mountain country It Is a most valuable adjunct to the sovereign Industry of mining Now that we are a worldpower politically we are more than ever a worldpower economically It has been said that we could feed the world Perhaps were are about to do It literally At all events our export trade In agricultural products pro-ducts must increase at a rate hitherto undreamed of and it Is this that makes the reclamation of the arid acres of the great West almost an absolute necessity ne-cessity now In a word we need these great resources In rich lands comparatively compara-tively near to the immeasurable markets mar-kets of the Orient in order not merely to keep the pace In international trade that Fate has set for us but as a measure meas-ure of protection the position that we have already taken |
