Show DEVERY REBUKED Chief New York Police Practically i Asked to Resign New York Nov 21The Herald will say tomorrow You should either properly perform your duties or resign your position as Chief oC Police This rebuke was administered to Chief Decry by Bernard J York President of tho Police board at the conclusion of a discussion today as to the police system of protecting crime In this city Chief Devery was In President Yorks office Commissioners Sexton and Abell being present but taking no part In the conversation They have since indicated that they do not agree with Mr York that the Chief should leave the force Construing the remark made to him In a literal sense Chief Devery asserts that he has not been requested to resign re-sign He further announces that he has no intention of quitting his position for thp m present By the present the Chief means until Richard Cr leer reaches England and has had time to cable his InstructJons concerning the police muddle I The Police board will hold a meeting next Monday afternoon when Mr Crokers decision will be made known Chief Devery will then accept Mr Yorks advice or the latter will acknowledge ac-knowledge himself beaten In the latter lat-ter event Mayor Van Wyck mayhave an opportunity to accept the resignation I resigna-tion of the head of the Police board |
