the attractiveness of school life I Surprises seem to be the order of the day at Sumner Friday afternoon the pupils of rooms 7 and 8 planned and executed an enjoyable affair for the principal ilr Barton who was taken completely l off his guard The table was spread In room 7 with quantities of goodies and the other teachers of the building were Invited to partake In a little talk at the close Mr Barton 1 Bar-ton delighted the children especially the girls by saying I have always thought girls could not keep a secret but now I know they can The pupils of Miss Ulmers room also enjoyed a little picnic on the same afternoon and spent a very pleasant time together though nil were In the secret The Spring Festival which Is to be given by the Sumner school for the benefit of the piano fund promises to bo most Interesting It will he hold next Friday evening and Saturday afternoon af-ternoon and evening May 11th and 12th Elaborate preparations have r been made for the entertainment which will consist of a fish pond music Punch and Judy and other attractions A fortuneteller will be In attendance and there will be booths at which candy Ice cream and other good things will be sold for all of which you may pay your money and take your choice The Emerson school will also hold a festival next Friday afternoon and I evening and no pains will be spared to make it a success A line pro gramme Is being prepared and the tilt fcrent rooms have In charge various booths In which all kinds of tempting things will be for sale The proceeds arc to go toward the payment of their new piano school kindergarten of which mention was made last week IH meeting with great success The members of the committee arc very enthusiastic and arc making a thorough thor-ough canvass of the ward with most encouraging results It looks now as e though they would attain their end and that speedily and with the opening open-ing of the school year the kindergarten kindergar-ten will doubtless be established on a reliable basis Miss Wiggins of the Bryant was the recipient of a pleasant little surprise on Wednesday afternoon A bountiful bounti-ful table wns spread and the other teachers of tho pupils arc 4 delighted with them The classmates of the Webster of Donald Thompson who has been very HI sent him a beautiful May basket Tuesday as a token of their sympathy The flowers were nil of
