Show GREAT ENIPE SOCIETY Maurading Members Organization are After Missionaries San Francisco Aug 5Re ir R Bent of Philadelphia a Presbyterian missionary who was forced to nee for his life from Chining Chow In the province of Shan Tung China > has arrived ar-rived hers with his wife and two children chil-dren on their way East Rev Bent said Chining Chow Is the location of one of the newest of the Presbyterian missions mis-sions In China and situated 600 miles northwest from Shanghai on the Grand canal Warned by tho threats of the pillaginghordes and by the massacres mas-sacres of missionaries and native Christians not many miles from our station wo escaped from there on June 16th packing a few belongings on a I cart and making an ov rland Journey of 160 miles tQ the nearest inland port from which we reached the coast In boats Nearly all our personal effects had to be left behind including my library and I suppose they arc destroyed de-stroyed by this time Fortunately wo were not ftdrsonally assailed by the Chinese but we were in constant terror ter-ror of being massacred and were clad to escape with our lives With us on our trip from Chining Chow was Miss Marshall who was connected with another an-other mission The section of country about Chin Ins Chow Is not infested with Boxers but by the marauding members of a similar organization called the Great Knife society which I believe Is tho parent society Originally It was organized or-ganized for defense against the mur dcrous robbers who persistently har rasscd the country to the westward and numbered among Its members reputable Chinese and wealthy merchant mer-chant 1t soon began to use Its power for other and ulterior purposes |
