Show INDIANS ARE DEFEATED Rio Grancles Victors of Close Struggle I SHORT LINES LOST J AT OGDEN r I The Second Schedule of the Season Opened Yesterday With Victories for the Two Leaders of the Old i Schedule Interesting Game in Salt lake With Several Brilliant Plays Lobsters and Shoijt Lines Had a I Varying Struggle in Ogdeu Notes I and Standings of tho Clubs I I The bluestocking sisters of this town removed from the breasts of Mr Trapps Indians all hope of swinging their feet over tho edge of the one thousand bench this season by laboriously labori-ously winning the game yesterday afternoon af-ternoon The savages came down feeLIng feel-ing pretty strong They brought along BillyTrapp In the flesh and as D further fur-ther augury of victory brought the clubs mascot little Eddie Trapp son of Billy aged about 4 1 years The youngster wore the club uniform and officiated na batboy part of the time he being somewhat shorter and little If at l heavier than one of the sticks I He created much amusement and made I quite a hit But the Trappt pore and ills and the Indians proved to be insufficient I in-sufficient to win the game PRETTY GOOD GAME The game itself was on the whole one of some magnitude Some of the plays were of the orthodox saffron hue but there were others There were plenty of errors on both sides a condition condi-tion not entirely new in baseball Clever baserunning and a collection of three hits In the third inning probably had as much to do with winning the game as anything I Both teams were changed around a little CapU Klelber of Pocatello was on second Bill Huynes was in left and Wilson was on first Bill Haynos is preeminently tho man of the Pocatello Po-catello team to play the first sack although al-though he played left well enough yesterday yes-terday I looks like a mistake to take him off the initial bag however This is merely a suggestion Mr Klelber We will continue In the future as in the past to permit you to run your own team but we feel that you might like and to have experience the benefit of our observation DUD ASiwV STAR Capl Dud Risloyof the bluestockings bluestock-ings played first and Was the feature of the game He made a couple of especially es-pecially brilliant stops of wild throws making n putout QI OTC of them when the act looked Impossible I was In the seventh that Klelber had sent one down to Gamble who threw It wild I Risley wOnt up and stopped the bal with his mitt catching It In his right I hand In time to tap Kleibcr and put him out much to the surprise that stout gentleman and everybody else Risloy also put a fine finish on the game Klelber was on first when Bill Haynes came to bat Bill hit a foul fly right Into RIsloys hands He caught the ball without taking his foot off the bag and Klelber was out that making the second time during the game that Risley had a nice new surprise sur-prise for Cupid Risleys throwing was also one of the features of the game Neither of the twirlers were battered very hard Harmon as usual was very much there striking out a list of twolve Including every man on the team except Pcndcrgraft making several sev-eral of tho batters walk the plank twice Harmon was especially effective yesterday with men on the bases behind be-hind him and lo his cool and heady work Is due the keeping I of the Rio Grande score In the single column I RIGHT AS USUAL There was a roar about 1 decision by Griffin yesterday As usual in such cases Griffin was right and the kickers were wrong I was In the eighth inning In-ning Dalesman was on second and a ball was hit to Gamble Gamble stopped to get the ball on the baseline and Dalesman ran Iri front of the fielder field-er instead of behind him in as the rules provide The result wds that Gamble did not field the ball and Grlfiln very properly called Datesman out A mighty roar went up from the crowd I and It looked for a time as if the game might be suspended Things even got to such 0 pass that Billy Trapp made an impassioned address to the westslde bleachers and all the Pocatello players gesticulated wildly and said mean things expressing a conviction that the rules were only made for luck anyway I is part of the game for players to kick If they feel anything Is to be gained by Itbut it is shocking bad taste for the spectators to do so especially if J they dont know what they are kickIng kick-Ing for The result will probably be that the most satlsfctory and best posted umpire the game has here will be driven out of the game because he insists upon doing his woric according to the book of rules and not in accordance accord-ance with the wishes of different Individuals Indi-viduals Griffin umpired f splendid game yesterday ruling on a number of close decisions In a highly creditable manner But then hes the umpire and will probably have to stand for all the abuse the selfconstituted committee commit-tee on rules In the grand stand and bleachers see fit to shower upon him Following Is 1 the game out ot the mud today ancr muKlntr all reasonable and necessary efforts to cfors II throw It away Such things sometimes happen and this was one of the times Aside from thti bad inning for both teams the game was clean and fast Swift doubles and brilliant stops calchog and throws were numerously in evidence e Father Glm took Tex Gierhart out of the box In the second for letting the first man walk and Izzy Hansford finished the game The crowd did not 3Com to like It much but the venerable Glm will not allow the baby lobsters to talk back The rear guards got but three men up In both the fourth and fifth Izzy struck out three men in the third the bases being full when the last man dislocated his shoulder trying to hit some of Izzys pets Casey picked up two cannon balls to atone for his error In the third The wild HIclantlman who plays In left for the lobsters brought down the house by a catch he made In the ninth He ran aa far as he could which was quite far fell down and put his hand under the ball News of this catch uncer been telegraphed to the Gude Duke of Ar gyll and a reply Is momentarily expected ex-pected The boys from the south drew blank for six innings but the mystic seventh I came near lo hoodooing the lobsters Two Jilts and a variegated assortment of over ripe errors brought In six runs ten men coming to bat But It seemed that the Short Lines would not lake a victory us a gift theyre a Ir so accustomed accus-tomed to defeat Accordingly they t1Y duplicated thc performance of the lob sters and gave them a few In the eighth Maudle Plaice aliened up her
