Show Rampton Says GOP Platform in Utah Blows Hot and Cold Calvin L. Rampton, candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator, Monday Mon-day night asserted that the Republican Re-publican state platform "blows hot and cold" on the subject of increased salaries for teachers. Speaking before the Davis County Nominating Convention at Farmington, Mr. Rampton continued, "The education plank of the Republican platform endorses en-dorses increased salaries for the teachers as an abstract proposition. propo-sition. However, it makes no suggestion as to the financing of such increases. It then comes out flatly against any federal aid for teachers' salaries. This is the type of a plank that is obviously ob-viously designed merely to get votes and, because it makes no provision for implementation of the platform, will be allowed to fall flat if the Republicans can succeed in controlling the Legislature." Leg-islature." "This is in contrast to the Democratic party platform which endorses an expenditure of $420 per year per child in average aver-age daily attendance." Mr. Rampton pointed out that the Republican platform took no position on federal aid for capital improvement for schools. "Apparently they intend to straddle this issue as the Republican Re-publican leadership in Congress has done," Mr. Rampton said. |
