Show Speculation Begins On Appointment Of New Salt Lake Citv Commissioner Speculation began this week as to who would be named to fill the vacancy on the Salt Lake City Commission created by the death of Commissioner J. K. Piercey. Although j there were no immediate im-mediate applications for the position, po-sition, observers expect a number num-ber of persons to come forth next week. City ordinances provide that the commission must fill the vacancy within 30 days with the successor to fill the unexpired term of two years, eight months. In event the other four commissioners com-missioners L. C. Romney, Joe L. Christensen, Conrad B. Harrison Har-rison and Mayor J. Bracken Lee cannot decide on the new commissioner com-missioner City Auditor Louis E. Holley would be called in to cast a vote. Meanwhile, the commission appointed Mayor Lee to take over temporary direction of the Public Safety Department which Commissioner Piercey headed at the time of his death. The mayor now heads the Finance Department. Depart-ment. He was head of the public safety department for a brief time shortly after his election. When the new commissioner is chosen there will be two appointed ap-pointed members serving on the commission. Mr. Harrison was named to fill a vacancy when Theodore Geurts left the commission. com-mission. Mr. Harrison's term expires on Dec. 31 of this year and will be up for election in November. The Commission this week adopted a resolution of condolence condo-lence to the family of Mr. J. K. Piercey. The resolution expressed ex-pressed the commission's sympathy sym-pathy and its sincere appreciation apprecia-tion for the contribution Commissioner Com-missioner Piercey made to "the welfare and advancement of the city." |
