Date of first publication Janu- - Utahn Calls for Appointment Of Health Fact Finding Group The alarming rise in recent years in the incidence of degene-rative diseases demands that this country redouble its efforts to "clearly define the role which the chemical contamination of ' our food, our water and atmos-phere plays in these diseases." Ont his note, Rep. David King of Utah renewed his plea for the formation of a federal fact find-ing commission on food and water contamination Wednesday in separate addresses to the House and to the National Tem-perance and Prohibition Council. From the floor of the House he reminded his colleagues that he introduced a bill last year two months before the Department of Health, Education and Welfare issued its historic warning on cranberries calling for the ap-nnintm- pnt of such a commission state are expected to attend the meetings, Mr. Simpson reported, port federal participation in a concerted educational campaign against the menace of lung can-cer. A warning issued this week by Public Health Service scientists, Mr. King said, reports that air pollution could create a national disaster. Studies have shown that the incidence of lung cancer is 11 times higher among the inhabi-jtant- s of big cities than it is in rural residents, he said. "And the lung cancer menace is that much greater for the cigarette smoker than for the non smoker, he said. If air pollution produces a national disaster, tobacco will inevitably contribute to that dis-aster, he said. c v and told them: "Americans in nearly every state and many organizations have written me their support 'of this proposal. Communications from the American Farm Bureau Federation and National Health Federation show they want a fact finding commission appoint-ed on this problem. In the battle against food and water contamination, such a commission, Mr. King said, may help the Food and Drug Admin-istration three ways in which it is not entirely able to help it-self. 1. It could help the FDA get the appropriation increases it needs to improve its control and inspection program. "It is gen-erally understood that FDA is under financed and also under staffed." 2. It would give authoritative, independent support to the some times controversial moves which the FDA must make against any dangerous chemicals. 3. It would spare the FDA the sometimes embarrassing task of recommending policies and leg-islation which it would be re-sponsible for enforcing. Mr. King addressed the annual national meeting of the Temper-ance and Prohibition Council at the Council's invitation and he asked the 100 delegates to sup- - ary 8th, A.D. 1960.
