Show Post Office Handling Record Load Of Christmas Mail Postal authorities in Washington Washing-ton estimate the current Christmas Christ-mas mail on a nationwide basis will be the highest on record both for greeting cards and parcels, par-cels, Postmaster D. R. Trevi-thic Trevi-thic announced this 'week. These conclusions are based on samplings of postal receipts made in several major cities in the nation which show anticipated antici-pated increases of 2 to 5 per cent over last year. Although local receipts are up 5 per cent over last year, the post office has been able to keep abreast of the heavy load due to the excellent response to the "Mail Early for Christmas" campaign, cam-paign, according to the Postmaster. Post-master. "While it is now too late to talk about mailing early, the inevitable in-evitable last minute mailers can avoid disappointment by mailing immediately. A day or two delay at this critical time may result in late delivery," he said. The Post Office Department once . again plans to deliver all Christmas mail prior to Christmas Christ-mas day as it has for the past several seasons, he said, in urging urg-ing local mailers to step up the pace in mailing cards and packages. He called attention also to the recent action of the Civil Aero- . nautics Board which approved . Postmaster General Summer-field's Summer-field's plan to make use of surplus sur-plus space on commercial planes to speed the movement by air of first class mail during the rush. To accommodate last minute mailers all post office stations and branches which normally close Saturday afternoons, will remain open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. December 19. |
