Show Pentathlon Program To Begin Soon With the approach of spring in the mountain west, hundreds of junior high and elementary schools are preparing for the annual junior Pentathlon athletic program. First held in 1930, the program has been staged for 21 years, being be-ing omitted from the school program pro-gram during the war years. It recently gained the attention of President Eisenhower's Committee Commit-tee on Youth Physical Fitness as an ideal program for the country's coun-try's youngsters. The Pentathlon is for boys below be-low 16 years of age. Each is given a "coefficient" based on his age and size; therefore, he is actually competing against himself. The program also is divided .'into the junior and senior divisions. divi-sions. More than 18,000 boys participated partici-pated in the 1957 Pentathlon, making it one of the largest single sports events in the mountain moun-tain west. ' i.' In the Pentathlon, each boy competes in broad jump, high jump, sprint racing, ball put and basketball throw with a handicap handi-cap determined by his age and size. |
