Show 1 uuu Parking Meier Rate increase The City Commission's action this week in boosting parking meter rates is likely to be the most hotly debated action that body has ever taken. We have no doubt the commission acted in good faith. But we seriously question the manner in which it arrived at the action taken. In this day when public relations counseling is available it is regrettable that the city fathers do not see fit to avail themselves of it. Reaction to the increased rates depends, of course, on how it affects the individual or group concerned. Downtown merchants are rightly incensed at the move. So are people who, for business reasons, have to do considerable con-siderable short-time parking on downtown streets. And so are the great mas of casual downtown parkers. But the anger of all these groups could have been considerably con-siderably diminished if the commission had only explained what it was up to as it went along. It is too late to attempt to justify an action after a bad impression had been made. The time to "educate" the public is while the action is being considered. |
