Sitting Safely on the Fence That most famous Republican, Abraham Lincoln, was often referred to as the "rail splitter." And it is becoming obvious that a closer-to-home but not nearly so famous Republican, Governor George D. Clyde, is fast acquiring a little nickname too the "fence sitter." Recently the governor began sending around to the weekly press what he terms "A Report From Your Governor." It's supposed to be a homey little newsletter telling the people what has been going on up at the capitol and how their governor is on the ball and looking out, for their interests. But thus far the subjects dealt with have been anything but fearless and on the whole most uninteresting. So far, if memory serves us, the governor has dealt with the problems of traffic safety and with obscene literature. Now these are stalwart subjects. But they are hardly ones which are liable to arouse controversy. They are good, safe subjects upon which a fence sitting man can safely expound. If the governor wanted to be of real service he might explain what the state is prepared to do to ease the financial burden of cities and to ease the unemployment brought to Utah by Repub- |
