Show I Demo Chairman Blasts GOP i j at "Spoonfeeding" Voters as all predictions indicate, and let 'em eat surplus when it is now crystal clear that leadership in the White House has already waited too long." Mr. Butler pointed out that while this "administration has waited, the American people saw unemployment climb to its 16-year 16-year high. They have seen prices received by farmers drop almost 20 per cent below prosperous Democratic years. They have seen small business failures up 18 per cent in January of this year. I Paul M. Butler, chairman of the Democratic National Com-i Com-i mittee, this week charged that 1 the Eisenhower Administration is following its same old pattern of spoon feeding the American people with honeycoated assurances assur-ances that everything is alright instead of providing leadership in trying to meet the deepening economic recession in the nation. "Wait and see" and "let 'em eat surplus" are the administration's latest palliatives for the troubled minds and anguished hearts of our country's more than five mil- They have seen the average 40-hour 40-hour work week of a year ago drop to 38.7 hours today, with the building trades averaging less than 35 hours per week. They have seen industrial production pro-duction down 11 per cent over a year ago, and steel production at only about 52 per cent of capacity. "How much longer must we wait before the American people peo-ple are given some measure of Presidential leadership? President Presi-dent Eisenhower and this Republican Repub-lican administration, just as President Hoover and his Republican Repub-lican Administration from 1928 through 1932, are seeing prosperity pros-perity just around the corner. But it is a corner which they never turn. "Democrats in Congress," Mr. Butler emphasized, "have no desire de-sire to wait until we see another an-other 1929. Democratic leadership leader-ship is pushing ahead with the kind of program that will prevent pre-vent another full scale depression depres-sion and the years of hardship and suffering that followed. "The too little and too late policies of the administration and the Republican party serve only to emphasize that the Republican Re-publican administration of today just does not understand the needs of the average American citizen; If Big Business is prosperous pros-perous that is enough for them. It is the same old Hoover thinking think-ing of 1929. But our economy can not grow or expand on a lopsided lop-sided prosperity. A depression in one segment of our economy eventually spreads to the whole economy, as we can so clearly see in today's dark economic picture." lion unemployed and their families, fami-lies, Mr. Butler said. jSJhis callous attitude is par-tirjJrly par-tirjJrly shocking since the sec-. sec-. onbr Eisenhower recession is the direct result of administration blindness and neglect if not outright planning." Mr. Butler continued: "While Democrats in Congress are spear heading an anti-recession program, pro-gram, this slogan conscious Administration Ad-ministration is folowing its same old pattern of trying to fool the people with Madison Avenue gimmicks instead of providing leadership and programs." Speaking at a party rally in Dixon, Illinois, Mr. Butler said that "the present slogans are no more effective in dealing with domestic crises than were the administration's well known slogans slo-gans for dealing with foreign cHgcs. ait and see, which the administration ad-ministration recommends to combat com-bat the depression, will not stop the climbing unemployment figures fig-ures at home any more than 'massive retaliation' and 'seize the initiative' stopped the Communist Com-munist expansion abroad. Chins-up Chins-up speeches one day and 'don't panic' the next are all very well and good, but they are not turning turn-ing the wheels of industry any more than the 'more bang per busk' philosophy kept our country coun-try abreast of its defense needs." Chairman Butler made it clear that he was in favor of distributing distribut-ing surplus foods to the needy families. "This is the least we can do to alleviate the suffering and hardships and we should be grateful that we have this surplus food. But why must we wait and see unemployment climb higher, |
