The Siege of Protesting Taxpayers Raised Last Nljrht. Councilman Evans presided at the session of the city board of equalization last night aud with the assistance of Messrs. Of the 108 abatements allowed 139 Tvere to widows and the complaints of 117 wearers of weeds were among those referred. A surprising but none the less pleasing feature of the session was the entire absence of protests from the railroad, telephone tele-phone aud other large corporations, the tanks excepted, and in consequence Assessor Asses-sor Leonard can be pardoned when he quietly pats himself on the back. The Commercial National bauk, through Its cashier, John W. Donnellan, made a special spe-cial claim for a reduction on the assessment upon ten pieces of .real estate upon which it j bad been compelled to foreclose and to take deeds in order to protect it interests, and which was now viewed as a part of the bank's capital. It also asked that $40,000 in mortgages be exempt from taxation. The matter was referred to tho committee oa tanks. Richard Young appeared in support of the petition of the Salt Lake Dramatic company ! for a reduction in the assessment of the Salt I 1 ake theater, the valuation of which the as- j essor placed at f 100,000, thus rolling up a tax of $700. He said the property valuation ($55,200) was about right, but the building raluation ($16,000) certainly high enough", but the personal valuation (28,800) was shout $2,000 in excess of its real worth.
