Attract iom e3 OlimaU Garfield Beaoh and Other Placsi of luterest. The city of Salt Lake has a fam irhich reaches around the world. The population is about 55,000, and is in-creasing at a rapid rate. It is situated at the base of the Wasatch mountain in a lovely valley, rich in agricultural re-sources and is eighteen miles distant from Great Salt Lake. Its elevation above sea level is 4.S50 feet. There are many points of interest to visitors in the city and near it. Ucib are some of them: Th Tiampis. This inagniuYont cieam-whit- e granite structure was began April 0, 3f50. It Is 100x200 feet, the walls are 100 feet high, and the towers, when completed, will be 200 feet height Over $3,500,000 have been expended on the temple, and U is now Hearing completion. In the same square with the temple is the spa-cious building caiied Tlif Tabruacl. Horc are held the services of tho mor-mon church and these are attended every Sunday by an immense congrega-tion of people, both m md gen-tile. The structure is in shape, seventy-fiv- e feet high wid ; 150 feet in length and breadth, it has a seating capacity of 12.000 people, and bare may be heard what is claimed to be the fin-est organ in the world. Fatti once sang in the tabernacle, and demonstrated that iu acoustic powers are very line. Th Ga?do Hoiu at Ameiia palace, was built by Brigham Young who willed that it could be the residence of his favorite wife. Amelia Folsom Young, but since his death it has been usedas the official residence of dignitaries of the church. Brightm nunc BHldaou known as the Bee-Hiv- e and the Lion House are structures, curious from associations. Theo re situated in what was once Hrigham Young's domain, allof which has passed Into other hands, save the large lot in in whach isKrigham Yonng's grave. Pruaptet Hill with its lookout tower commands a splendid view of the city and its sur-roundings. The Tithing Buffeting possesses interest as being the general depot for tajcescoUeoted by the mormon church from its disciples. Liberty Park. In the southeastern portion of the city is a beautiful resort and can be reached by rapid transit trains. Th. Chamber of Corami-rca- . on Second South street is visited by those who take an interest in the com-mercial standing of tho city. There are eeveral large eases containing speei- - mens of Utah's mineralogy which ot rutich aiteutiou. Bait Lake Thaittai This latter place of amusement was ' built by Hrigham Young over thirty rears ago. ft is a large and beMtUul leiuple and comfortably arranged. Assembly Hall. sear the temple, is used in winter for worship by the mormons, the taberna-5l- e lieing too large to admit of proper hee.ting. Assembly hall is lMxM feet, and cost 1150,000. The ceiling is dee-srate- d which church pleturel among them the Angel Morom disclosing the hiding place of the golden plates to Joseph Smith. Clsidp rioaelaa. three miles east of tho citv and over 400 feet above it is beautifully laid out in the midst of lawns and orchards, and the barracks and houses of the officers are built of stone. The post commands a wide view of the city and beyond where Greut Salt Lake lies molten sil-ver at the foot of the western inouu-tain- s. Reek's Hot Springs are m the northern part of the city about three miles from tho business cnter. I'hey issue from the base of the moun-tains, and are regarded as a Very valua-ble aid in eases of rheumatism dyspep-sia and scrofulla. Tlie waters are used both internally and externally, ami there is an excellent bath house and necessary appointment lor the comfort of patients. The Warm Sulphur Springs are between the Hot Springs and tho city, about one mile from the postnfnce. There is a good hotel and oomfortabla both house in connection with the aprings, and they can be reached by etreet railway. Th Mouatataa are- unsurpassed in magnificent conons. and at least a doen of tho grandest are within reach of the city. These invite the tourist to spend days, weeks or months among their wild recesses to fish, to hunt, to scale the peaks and ridges, and to gather wild (lowers by the mossy springs, beneath the shade of umbrageous pines. Big Cottonwood canon should bo seen by every tourist. Here are lake Mary and Martha from which Hows the turbulent Cottonwood river; and at the base of the mountains are lakes Blanche, Florence and Lilian. Besides these are Mills creek, Parley's Kmigraiiou, and City Creek canons, all extremely picturesque and duiightfully romantfo. Plasaat Drives abound in scores around the outskirts of the city; along the quiet country roads, and through tlie laues dividing meadews of rich green alfalfa and fields of grain; while the majestic mountains are never entirely lost sight of. From under the branohtis of trees and above hedges of the wild do;r-ros- glimpses are caught of snow covered peaks. A drive to Fort Douglas, and then a mile further out to tiie mouth of Kmigiation eauou is almost delightful. It was here that the sight of the mormon ploaaert vva-- . firs! made grad by the vast expanse of Salt Lake valley suddenly burst upon them, on the :Mth of July, 1(347. The Or. at Malt I.aUa. "I think," says Ernest Ingersoll, "fov persons realize how wonderfully, trangely beautiful this island sea i3," and speaking of its sunsets Phil Robin-son had said: "Where have 1 not seen sunsets, by land and sea, in Asia, Af-rica, Europe and America, and where cau I say I have ever seen more won-d- e rous coloring, more electrifying effects than iu the sunset on the Great Salt Lake of Utah." Salt Lake it aa oeautl-fii- l a sheetvf water aa can be lound anywhere The waves are bright blue If green, and as they dance on itssurfaeo It would be hard lo tell which color pre-rail- It is dotted with beautiful Islands, and it affords the finest salt jyater in the worK.
