Show Thk word "schoolmaster" was in common use lifty and even twenty-live yesrs ago, but has given place almost entirely to school teacher. There is a move to revive it In New York, where an association has been formed known as "The New York Schoolmasters' club," which contains not only many of the teachers of the pub-lie pub-lie schools but principals, professors pro-fessors and collego presidents. The name may be rewved, but il will hardly convey to modern young America the icca of the typical schoolmaster of the old-time subscription school or ol the pioneer public schools, whose hickory rod was the cnililemof an authority not to be trilled with. |
