It is situated at the base of the Wasatch mountain in lovely valley, rich iu agricultural re-sources and is eighteen miles distant from Great Salt Lake. Its elevation above sea level is 4.300 feet. There arty many points of interest to visitors in ibe city aud near it. Hero are some of them: Th Temple. This magnificent cieani-whit- e granite structure was began April 0, 18fi3. In the lame square with the templo is the spa-cious building called The Taoeruaole. Here are held the services of the mor-mon church aud these are attended every Sunday by an immense congrega-tion of people, both mormon and gen-tile. The structure is o in shape, seventy-fiv- e feet high and ;.uuxl60 feet in length and breadth, ll ii is a seating capacity of 12,000 people, and here may be heard what is claimed to be the fin-est organ in tho world. Patti once sang in the t abernacle, aad demonstrated that its acoustic powers are very line. The Qa?do lioue or Amelia palace, was built by Brigham Young who willed that it could be the residence of his favorite wife. Amelia Folsoin Young, but since his death it has been used as the odieial residence ui dignitaries of the church. " BriKbam Yooati'e KwldMH known as the Bee-IIrV- e and the Hon House are structures, curious from associations. These are situated in what was ouce Brigham Young's domain, all of which has passed Into other hands, save the large lot in in which is Brigham Young's grave. Procpeet Hill with its lookout tower commands a splendid view of the uity aud its sur-roundings. Tho ntli.r-.,- ; Botldlnr possesses interest as being the general depot for taxes collected by the mormon church from its disciples. Liberty Park, In the southeastern portion of the city is a beautiful resort aud can be reached by rapid transit trains. Th Chamber of Cemmcroe. on Second South street is visited by those who take an interest in the com-mercial standing of the city. There are Sksveral lame cases containing speci- - mens of Utah's mineralogy which at-tract much attention. Auembly Hall. near (he temple, ia used in winter for syorehip by the mormons, the taberna-sl- e being too large to admit of proper beating. Assembly hall is 120x68 feet, and cost $150,000. The reiling is dec-orated which church pictures among them the Angel Moroni disclowiug the biding place of the golden plates to Joseph Smith. Caaap Doagla. three miles east of the citv and over 400 feet above it is beautifully laid out in the midst of lawns and orchards, and the barracks and houses of the officers are built of stone. The post commands a wide view of the city and beyond where Great Salt Lake lies molten sil-ver at the foot of the western moun-tain. Beck' Hot Spring arc in the northern par! of the city about three miles from the business center. Thoy issue from the base of the moun-tains, and are regarded as a very valua-ble aid in cases of rheumatism dyspep-sia and scrofulla. The waters are U6ed both internally and externally, and there is an excellent bath house and necessary appointment for the coml'orl ol patients. The Warm Sulphur Spring are between the Hot Springs and the city, about oue mile from the postoftice. There is a good hotel and comfortable; bath house in connection with the springs, and they can be reached by street railway. Tkn ftiaiiatslH are OBsarpaMed in magnificent eononn. and at least a dozen of the grandest are Within reach of the city. These invite the tourist to spend days, weeks or months among their wild reeesses to Bsh, to hunt, to scale the peaks and ridges, and to gather wild flowers by the mossy springs, beneath the shade of umbrageous pines. Big Cottonwood canon should be seen by every tourist, litre are lake Mary and Martha from which flows the turbulent Cottonwood river; and at the base, of the mountains ere lakes Blanche, Florence and Lilian, Besides these are Mills creek, Parley's Emigration, and City Creek canons, all extremely picturesque aud delightfully lOlUJUUO. I'le UriVM abound In scores around the outskirts ol the city; along the quiet country roads, anil through tho lanes dividing meado ws of rich green alfalfa and fields of grain; while the majestic mountains are never entirely lost sight of. From under the branches of trees and aboo hedges of the wild dog-ros- e glimpses are caught of snow covered peaks. A drive to Fort Douglas, and then a mile further out to the mouth of Emigration oauou is almost iluiightfui. it was here that the siiTht of tlm mormon pioneers was first made (flail by the vast expanse of Salt Lake valley suddenly blUft upon them, ou the 24th of July, 1847. The Ureal Ball l ( "I think," says Ernest Ingenoll, "few persons realize how wonderfully, elraugely beautiful this island sea is," and speaking of its sunsets l'hil Robin-son had said: "Where have 1 not seen IOnsets, by land anil sea, in Asia, Af-rica, Europe and America, and wlieio caa I Say I have ever seen BOOMS won- - derous coloring, mon sjeptrltylngssleoii than in the sunset on the (rie it Salt Luke of Utah." Salt Lake is as oeauti-(u- l a sheet of water as can be found anywhere. The waves ate bright blue rgreen.and as they dance on its surface It would be hard Lti tell which color pre-vails.
