TIKSDAY, KKBIU'A Si. lSWli. the Snlioa Press (newsiest of our Utah exchanges) seems to iudieate a scarcity of ink in the south. It was talked of something like a year ago that the hoiinonry line between Washington and Iron counties he chanired so as to in-clude Kanmirra in Washington county. A protest to this cliunge has licen presented in the legislature by the citizens of Harmony. Ik'tiif t'ttiltiiut. a a The Nalina town council has adopted an ordinance limiting the use of tire-arm- s within the town limits. Some-thing of this kind is needed at Gun-nison as is evidenced by the following news note from thai place: "Wednet-da-night a crowd of boys rode through i he streets tiring off their revolvers. bey wore masks and the officers have hceu tmablc to detect who they were." a (iood reports art coming in these days from Lu I'lata and other mining campa which are tributary to Ogden. Steadily through the winter the work of development has beB prosecuted, und there is now no doulit tliat Lu I'lata will become a steady shipping camp before she shall huve reached the age oi one year, there are other eamna that will come to the front before the show whitens the ground seal w inter, and if the rood people of Ogden do not benefit greatly from the unparalled mining activity In the Surrounding camps it will be their own fault. Ogden SUW&mt. a The sanitary condition of Richfield must have been something fearful. A correspondent of the Salina Prest from that place writes; "It is only just to remark that our city dads are making the greatest effort to improve the sani-tary condition of our beautiful city. They are clearing out the water courses, purging them of all filth and removing all decayed matter. No less than forty carcasses of dead animals were discov-ered and removed from our streets and taken to the outskirts of the town aud burned." a a The Standard says: "A city of s size aud importance .should main-tain crossing sweepers in the center of the town, particularly on busy days like Saturday." S a Tin- Qgdeo Standard and tho Provo Dispabii bars looked horns over tho tin plain question. Tho Standard asserts that the Ditpatch "is not satisliotl with hoiiijj proven a falsitior," and tho Dis-patch says "this is gall, pure and on the part of tho Stan-itar- Aud so it goes. a Kichliehl wants a etufew ordinance, and seems to need it badly. A cor-respondent of the Salina Press says: "Why can't Richfield have a curfew Every Sabbath night, not to say anything about other uights in tho week, tho boys make a dangerous nuis-ance i if themselves. This ringing of bells, bauging doors and windows should be effectually stopped; since reasoning with them has proved use-less, a wholesome example of a few might be of more avail. Last Sunday evening some boys banged away at the door of a residence two blocks from Main street and scarod a lady, whose husband was absent iu Uluo valley, to such an extent that sho gave birth to a child prematurely that died within two hours after it was born." THK J'liKss OF UTAH. The Park City Miner warns tho itv iDuncil uot to be hootl-wiuku- into panting a license to a variety theater under somo mild and moral name. 'losin it says: "The I'ranklin avenue ' joint" vas rcspeetable enough when they lirst bewail business, but now it is ii perfect blister on too name of Salt Lake." The Heaver Vlunian says: " Thirteen Wampi were arrested iu town last frveek." as We leurn that the city eonncll intend eiJnulin a cordon of trees around the i;rave. gl(ird and also puttiuir in a ditch for irrita. 0 in purposes. This is a tniicli neoded im lovcineut. The irrowtb of psMta4 shrub. r ry, which la made possihlc thereby, will add ireaUy to the appeAvrsneo of the city of the Dead. The associated press informs us that Marie Blaim, keeps her decree of di-vorce neatly tied with a blue ribbon in a handsome ease she' made for it. The Mississippi legislature has passed a bill creating a new county, to l.e called "Jeff Davis" county. One would 8iippo.se the south had suffered enough woe through Davis to want to forget him. Speaker Ckisp is evidently arranging to pay off his obligation to Senator HlLL for services rendered In the speakership light by trying to swing Georgia into lino for him. The Atlanta Constitution has already declared for Hn.r. and the next important paper in tho state, the Augusta Chronirlc, now drops t't.i.VK-Lan-aud hoists the name of lltt.i. If tho late Henhv VV. (Ikaoy were living there would not he much show for llill-is-in Georgia, SOMKTBIMO VIIX DBOP, Hon. J. L. Hawi.ins. one of the home rule advocates of the Latter-da- dem-ocracy has roturued from Washington Where he has been lobbying iu tho in-terest of tho scheme hatched between the church and fifteen or twenty who aro extromely desir-ous of serving the pooplo in of-ficial capacity. Mr. Uawlin.h kindly te.ls tho public all about his experience at. the national capital and like the proverbial politician who has the vote of the entire community in bis vest pocket, he is perfectly certain that home rule is going through con-gress with a rush. Indeed, il would seem from Mr. Uawi.ins' statements that members of congress will be climb-ing over each other's backs iu anxiet y to be first to get in motions for suspen-sion of the rules in order to get that bill through and relievo Utah, and es-pecially tho coterie of olHee-scokin-patriots here, of tho overwhelming bur-den of distress under which all are now daggering. The brother thinks tho prospect of the bill iu tho senate is nearly or quite as good as in the house, and is certain that nearly all of the members of the senate committeo on territories will vote for it. Only two of thai commit-tee will cortainly oppose it in tho broth-er's opinion; I'i.att of Connecticut the chairman, and JOKKS of Arkansan, and the top-loft- sentiment actuating the last named senator in opposition is at-tributed to tho fact that ho has an old friend and neighbor in olliee in Utah. The brother insists that press reports of tho breaks made by "Kentucky" Smith and Judge Judii are incorrect, and that tho speeches delivered by those gentlemen had a liuo ef-fect. All through no reck- - less talk or untrue) charos wore mailo by any member of the Utah , 'democratic" dologatiou; iu fact, just a simple portrayal of tho horrible con-dition of affairs existing here resultant from tho authority exorcisod by federal officials, was enough to melt tho hearts of congressmen, republicans as well as democrats. Democrats and republicans in tho senate will unite to give Utah re-lief even to the extent of granting Matehood, but tho emergency is so jircssing that the homo rule bilj will be lirst passed, because it will require (several months iu which to get the ma-chinery of the lirst in operation, and the deplorable condition of affairs re-sulting from the horrible oppression and mis-rul- e extant here, calls for nummary action on the part of con-gress, and it will be taken at once, oven if it is necessary to suspend the ruins a dozen times a day to effect it. Readers of The Timks may now scan its Washington dispatches with the ex-pectation that something is going to flrop in tho national capitol building, nnd that very soon, too. The "demo-cratic" delegation baa got in its work; Utah will obtain relief speedily, and pome of its members are going to have their share of official loaves and fishes in lieu of having to make further drafts, on the tithing fund. THE P. 0. iOF A. BALL. A IJrilliunt AflUlr at tho Walker Pavilion J.at Night About One Hundred Couplea 1'reaeot. The P. 0. a. of A. ball at the Walker pavil-ion last night was a brilliant affair. It was the llrst bull given in this city by that order, but It is to be hoped that it will not bo the last. There were about one hundred couples present. Dancing was the order of the even-iuK- , with ii supper at 11 o'clock to vary the round of pleasure. The scene was a particularly gay one. The members of the order wore the red, White and blue sashes, and these, mingled with the costumes of the ladies, gave to the scene n brilliancy and variety very pleasing to the oye. llio committees had left nothing un done that could add to the enjoyment of the occasion, and deserve special credit They were as follows: Committee of Arraui;cmcnte J.
