Show THE IMISTOFFICK SALE. A AYashini;!ou correspondent writes to a local paper that Governor Thomas, while in Washington, is lobbying for the Bale of the Douley block to the ovcrnnient, in lieu of the public tmilding for which an appropriation appropria-tion is pending before congress. Wo believe and we hope that there is not a word of truth in it. W'c believe this because the correspondent cor-respondent has erred in all his statements regarding the purposes of the governor during dur-ing his present visit to the national capital, and in some instances so grotesipicly as to prove conclusively that he has been thrown off the sccut and is reduced to mere iruess work in his reports. Thus he claimed Ilia: Mr. Thomas was working to defeat the Home Role bill when the governor promptly rcjoiued that he regarded the bastard measure so dead that lie Wouid consider it indecent to disinter it, and that he had therefore not mentioned it with a single syl- i lable. And we hope the statement is untrue be- j cause we want a creditable building in ad- ' ditionto the Dooi.ey block. Salt Lake City is clearly entitled to it and with the proper work wc will get it at an early day. We ! have every reason to believe that Chair jiau Hoi. max is fully In-formed In-formed as to the condition o ; things here. He knows that the temporary quarter, now '.cased by the govemmcat arc I adequate to the present wants, and that a ;"U.,0X.V building, including the site, would not improve on them. To provide for the ! future needs of this city no less than $1,00(1,- j O'K) must be appropriated, and until we ran i secure that amount we prefer to remain in the temporary and comfortable abode. Such structures as the McCohnick, Doolet and Commercial blocks are a credit to the builders, but we do not want to convert any ol them into government buildings and prevent pre-vent Uncle Sam from putting his dollars where they will do us the most irood. |
