Show PARKER STANDS PAT. And, Declares that Me is Still Captain of Police Other Police Notes. "It won't take much to cover 'em," said Captain Parker this afternoon, "but I'll bet ray life's savings that I occupy this office and draw the pay for doing it until this administration ad-ministration goes out, They can't railroad me by any such route as they laid out in the council chamber the other night. "I'm still captain of police." "I guess that's correct," interposed one of the most prominent members of the territorial terri-torial bar; "the bet's a safe one. The council coun-cil failed to go about its work in the right way. Briefly: At a meeting on the night of the 20th inst., a vote was had on an ordinance to abolish the oflice of captain of the police, Councilman Pickard, mayor pro tern, declined to cast a vote w hile he weilded the gavel. The supporters lacked one vote on the floor and called upon the chair Pickard, the occupant to vote. He refused. They allowed him until the next night to make up his mind and register his vote. The following night there was no quorum and the members adjourned without Packard's vote on the transaction of any other business. They were reassembled on Monday night last, Pickard still in the chair. He was called on for his vote yea or nay to the ordinance that had been introduced and voted on a week before. He voted in the affirmative and the office of captain of police was declared abolished. No one else voted at this time. The supporters who had voted for it on November twenty were not polled. ' Was the entire number who voted in support of it originally present? I am told not. They had no right to tack Pickard's 'adjourned vote' and declare the ordinance adoDted. I agree with Parker that unless some more valid course is pursued he is captain of police ! until his term expires under the present ad- ! ministration."
