He vigorously opposes the idea of Cardinal Gibbon's candidacy, can-didacy, declaring, among other things, that under Gibbons the church would cease to be "Roman." This attack on the American cardinal is regarded at the Vatican as an expression of the fear of the liberals that Gibbons might be elected at the next conclave. con-clave.
