Show KiNOKANCE AND IllCMOCKACV, It is a favorite method of controversy on the part of our republioan friends to appropriate to their own party all the brains, ths wealth, tho progress aud enterprise en-terprise of the country. Ouly the common com-mon people, according to republican representation, the artisans, the laborers labor-ers and those who truckle to their prejudices pre-judices aud interests are democrats. The manufacturers, the land barons and railroad kings, the cattle monarchy mon-archy the millionaires, the arittooracy, are all republicans. The gilt edge gentry gen-try who ride in Pulman palace sleepers aud dine at tho first class hotels are all ours, say they; the democratio party is made up of the "rag-tag aud bob tail;" are wearers and advocates of cheap coats; tbey Inhabit no palaces but live in cottages and sometimes irv hovels. All this is said with an air-snitl'ing assumption as-sumption of superiority that is ever your true sign of codlish aristocracy, and would be amusing if it wore not contemptible. Herald. The foregoing contains nothing that is worth the labor of reprinting, but it shows something of democratic methods meth-ods und will bear some attention on that score. The Herald just now Is engaged en-gaged in attempting to uiaka democratio demo-cratio converts in Utah, aud that Is tha way it goes about itl It gravely asserts that no mormon should be a republican republi-can and yet it indulges in such utterances utter-ances as that to lead the people of this territory into the democratic fold. The Times is glad to soo suoh bun-come bun-come as that appearing in the columus of lis democratio contemporary, because be-cause it will certainly make good republicans re-publicans of many who might otherwise other-wise join the democracy. Intelligent people know well enough that no such representations ara ever made in behalf of ths republican party. The strength of republicanism Is in tbe ranks of the common people the artisans and the laborers. A large majority of the intelligent in-telligent workers iu all the northern states are republicans, while the democratio demo-cratio vote in the north is swelled by tbe ballots of tho ignorant, lou may go into any northern state where there is a large city aud go Into the Ignorant wards of that city, and tbore you find tbe heavy demooratio vote. A large number of the large cities of the north are controlled by the democrats through the ignorant vote. This is the exact truth, and it is well worth the attention of any Individual who has not made up bis mind to which parly he shall belong. be-long. Young men in Utah may well hesitate about joining a party tbat depends de-pends upon tbe low wards of tbe great cities for its majorities. The state of New York, outside of the city of New York, has an enormous republican majority, ma-jority, something like 00,000, but the Tammany hordes make it doubtful in every election. The city of Philadelphia, Philadel-phia, with its tens of thousands of artisans, ar-tisans, has no distinctively Ignorant sections, and it is republican by 25,000, making the state of Pennsylvania reliably re-liably republican in every election. The artisans are all right; they are largely republicans; but wherever ignorance ig-norance rules, democracy reaps a bar-vest. |
